Comment Age Issues (Score 1) 112

DHS has lots of Cybersecurity job postings.

Here's the catch:

If you have spent the last 20years of your post-college professional IT life working in different combinations over time of systems administrator, network engineer, IT project manager, programmer on security, security-ish, and non-security projects and day-to-day IT work, then the you - the 40+ year old - are deemed to be to fucking old to take a new job at DHS/USGOV as as an IT Security Specialist.

So, that cuts the pool of those available to USGOV by 40-60%.

2) No open direct connections from the internal network to the internet in general by workstations.

3) Don't allow non-corporate workstations on the Corporate LAN. The corp shoudl have a guest LAN that includes internet access for guest and personal devices of employees.

4) Corporate workstations must have up-to-date AV to connect to the Corp LAN (force them to the guest network otherwise and issue an alert).

5) Don't allow users the rights to install software (but have a robust User Tech Support organization that can quickly test and push out ok'd software to workstations).

6) Have and actually monitor logs from egress filters on the network firewalls.

Bill To Ban All Salt In Restaurant Cooking 794

lord_rotorooter writes "Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn, introduced a bill that would ruin restaurant food and baked goods as we know them. The measure (if passed) would ban the use of all forms of salt in the preparation and cooking of food for all restaurants or bakeries. While the use of too much salt can contribute to health problems, the complete banning of salt would have negative impacts on food chemistry. Not only does salt enhance flavor, it controls bacteria, slows yeast activity and strengthens dough by tightening gluten. Salt also inhibits the growth of microbes that spoil cheese."

Submission + - 8 Must-Have Facebook and Twitter Add-Ons (itworld.com)

JimLynch writes: By no means are Twitter and Facebook perfect: You might wish that Facebook made it more intuitive to hide FarmVille or certain status updates. Or, maybe you wish that Twitter would introduce a new feature like nested tweets. Good news: For many of these website tweaks or suggestions, there's likely to be a script you can download to fit the bill.

Submission + - Enom/BulkRegister ripping of customers (wordpress.com)

closer2it writes: enom.com as recently pushed is customer's accounts to BulkRegister as a Premium account, ripping off $99 from customers without warning. I thankfully use a one-time credit card number and they can't get cash from me automatically, but the author of the blog post and comments authors weren't so lucky. I wonder what would happen or has happen to someone not in US like me. I never had one single problem with enom until now, and this has scam written all over it. Is ENOM becoming the new RegisterFly or GoDaddy? I'm planning to gradually leave Enom's "sister site" Bulkregister, are there some affordable registrars and with good historial that slashdotters may know? Why do registrars always make bad moves against is customers?

Submission + - Has Tech Overload Created Computer-Apathetic Kids? (extremetech.com)

WesternActor writes: Over at ExtremeTech, Managing Editor Matthew Murray posts a lengthy rumination about kids and computers, and wonders whether the explosion of computers has made kids less interested in technology overall. He reminisces about growing up playing games like Rocky's Boots and creating RAM disks and writing book reports in BASIC, and suggests that it may cause problems down the line that today's kids don't have to understand more about how computers work in order to use them. Do you agree with that, or have you noticed it about the kids in your life? If so, what are you doing to combat the problem--or is it already too late?

Submission + - New lithography tech promises 10nm circuits (thinq.co.uk)

arcticstoat writes: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin have developed a new lithography technique that could result in silicon chips with 10nm circuits. Called molecular transfer printing (MTP), the technique uses a combination of block copolymers, which form crystal patterns that accurately reproduce etched silicon circuits. As well as reducing the cost of producing multiple silicon master chips, the technique can also reproduce circuit patterns where the gaps between the circuits are half the size of the original etching. The team, headed by scientist Paul Nealey, have already produced patterns on a sillicon wafer, in which the gaps between the features were only 15nm. Nealey is also confident that the team could produce features that measure just 10nm. As a point of comparison, most of today's CPUs and GPUs use 45nm, 40nm or 32nm circuits.

Submission + - Security Snake Oil or Breakthrough: InZero (businessweek.com)

sjanich writes: BusinessWeek has an article on a security security startup called InZero. They have a device seems to be a HW sandbox of sorts. So is something like this a breakthrough for security of workstations or more snake oil? Can any security device with Russian connections be trusted? How many IT people are going to be asked by their bosses in the next few weeks about this?
