Submission + - Obama administration had restrictions on NSA reversed in 2011 (washingtonpost.com)

Ceyx writes: The Washington Post claims that the Obama administration secretly won permission from a surveillance court in 2011 to reverse restrictions on the National Security Agency’s use of intercepted phone calls and e-mails, permitting the agency to search deliberately for Americans’ communications in its massive databases, according to interviews with government officials and recently declassified material.

Submission + - Yet another win for general relativity

Ceyx writes: Astronomers have used ESO’s Very Large Telescope, along with radio telescopes around the world, to find and study a bizarre stellar pair consisting of the most massive neutron star confirmed so far, orbited by a white dwarf star. This strange new binary allows tests of Einstein’s theory of gravity — general relativity — in ways that were not possible up to now. So far the new observations exactly agree with the predictions from general relativity and are inconsistent with some alternative theories. The results will appear in the journal Science on 26 April 2013. See the ESA newsletter here http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1319/ or the article in nature http://www.sciencemag.org/content/340/6131/1233232.abstract?sid=a47b8acc-e8dd-47c3-bddd-a46914a1df60
Ubuntu

Submission + - Ubuntu AppStore Goes Online (muktware.com)

sfcrazy writes: One thing that GNU/Linux misses the most is marketing. We never get to know about the new and useful tools which are being added due to the lack of PR muscles. Recently Ubuntu made yet another incredible move which makes the application installation process of Windows look ancient. Ubuntu silently took its apps on-line by launching 'Ubuntu App Directory' (the name can be more attractive like Ubuntu App Shop).
Social Networks

Submission + - Occupy Protestors Tread The Social Networking Rout (itproportal.com)

hypnosec writes: Techie Occupy Wall Street protesters are planning to create a social networking meant primarily for organizing protests and getting people together for various causes. In the year 2011, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook helped protesters to spread their cause and garner support across the world. What started out as a minor protest comprising of a handful of people turned into a worldwide protest thanks to the use of social media. According to Wired, after seeing the impact social media platform have had on protests worldwide, several Occupy Wall Street protesters are creating their own social networking platform aimed at spreading awareness about a particular cause and rallying people for protests.
AMD

Submission + - AMD releases open source Fusion driver (fudzilla.com)

Ceyx writes: AMD has released an open source Linux driver for its upcoming Ontario APU.
Ontario is the first Fusion APU slated for release and AMD is obviously keen to get the Linux community on board the Fusion bandwagon. The new driver will appear in new Linux distributions starting with version 2.6.38.

I think it would be too early to call FTL travel and time travel impossible (the two beeing closly connected). There are interesting theories for FTL (like the Alcubierre drive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive) and although this does require negative matter as parent noted this does not mean it is impossible. The Casimir effect for example (a well known quantum effect) produces a mass-negative region of space.

Einstein Letter Goes on Sale 615

ErkDemon writes "For any Slashdotters who want a piece of frameable Einstein memorabilia, a letter from A.E. to Eric Gutkind goes on sale at Bloomsbury Auctions today (May 15th). The content of the letter mostly deals with Einstein's views on religion. (Einstein pronounces himself rather unimpressed by the whole idea and rejects it as "childish.") The Guardian has printed a translated excerpt from the letter."
