Submission + - Scientific Documentary on Global Warming

Anonymous writes: The Washington Times is reporting about a documentary that will air in the UK this week on global warming. Apparently there will be "an impressive roll-call of experts, including nine professors, who are experts in climatology, oceanography, meteorology, biogeography and paleoclimatology. It also says the experts come from prestigious institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Pasteur Institute in Paris, the Danish National Space Center and universities and other schools in London, Ottawa, Jerusalem, Alabama, Virginia and Winnipeg, Canada."

Submission + - uCalc Language Builder for creating prog. language

Daniel Corbier writes: "uCalc Language Builder , which lets programmers create programming languages by writing code in a very simple bootstrapping language specifically designed for the purpose, without the need for Lex, Yacc, or large volumes of code, is available for download (beta). Though still a work in progress, it already includes versions of languages as different as Basic, Forth, Lisp, and more. The code for those languages is in plain text files, that users can load right into the generic uCalc interpreter, which then turns into an interpreter for that language. The developer requests feedback on this concept."

Submission + - MPAA says 2006 was great, whats the P2P fuss?

Jared Moya writes: "According to a new MPAA press release, 2006 was a great time to be in the movie biz, with the highest profit margins in years. Their "bullish year," as they refer to it, thereby heaps a ton of skepticism upon all of their claims that illegal P2P and file-sharing services will be the death knell of their industry. It's eerily reminiscent of a study done back in June of 2005 by Felix Oberholzer-Gee and Koleman Strumpf called "The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales — An Empirical Analysis" that effectively argued that contrary to the claims of the recording industry illegal music downloads have had no noticeable effects on music sales. Is the movie industry full of "bull" as well?"

Submission + - BBC upgrade to Vista - Sort of!

SimonF writes: "Tim Weber from the BBC upgrades to Vista and doesn't enjoy the experience overmuch.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6407419.stm

My favorite bit is from TFA "Now here is the dirty little secret of all the expensive PC helpers out there. Upgrading hardware is really easy. As long as you make sure the new hardware fits into the slots that come with your computer and does not overburden its power supply, it's usually just a case of carefully lifting out the old and slotting in the new piece of kit."

This is from the guy who has days of misery upgrading to Vista that any "expensive PC helper" would have steered him clear of.

Man down the pub computers is alive and kicking!"

Submission + - California proposes to ban incandescent lightbulbs

zhang1983 writes: "A California Assemblyman Llyod Levine wants to make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs with the "How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act" The act will promote Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) to replace the inefficient incandescent lightbulbs. According to him, "Incandescent lightbulbs were first developed almost 125 years ago, and since that time they have undergone no major modifications, meanwhile, they remain incredibly inefficient, converting only about 5 percent of the energy they receive into light.""

Journal Journal: Will Vista Kill Microsoft?

It used to be that Microsoft was the operating system that strove to be most easily usable by the lowest common denominator, and Linux was perceived as a tool only for the most serious geeks. So, by using Microsoft products for over a decade, end users had been, in some degree, 'dumbed down.' But the main intent, make no mistake, was to please the end user.

amightywind writes: A commercial Zenit 3SL rocket blew up on the launch pad Tuesday on would have been its 24th flight. The Sea Launch platform is towed from its port in Long Beach to the equatorial Pacific where satellite launches can take full advantage of the Earth's rotation. Sea Launch is a consortium of 4 companies from the Norway, Russia, Ukraine, and the US.

Submission + - ID KEY system will deter virtually all fraud crime

Yogesh Raja writes: "Identity fraud will continue to grow because we rely on signatures despite of knowing that in the event of crime they would not even expose person's gender. To make signature reliable we should apply ID sticker (small sticker with person's photo and name printed on it) to the document and countersign. Fraudsters can misuse victim's personal details but not their unique appearance (true identity or visible biometric) Current signature system is like passports without photos and that is why it is so difficult to deter and prosecute fraudsters. Soon ID KEY system (described on website www.xwave.co.uk) will make fraud crimes a thing of past by making signature and PIN number systems reliable and foolproof."

Submission + - Vista Speech Recognition Exploit

Cyriustek writes: Microsoft's new Vista appears to already indicate new vulnerabilities exist. On the DailyDave, Sebastian Krahmer brought up the idea of using the voice command feature for exploiting the system. With this in hand, George Ou tested it, and found Sebastian's thoughts to be correct. Let's enjoy the sound of Vista systems in the office shouting Exterminate in Dalek style.

Submission + - Oracle to bid for SAP?

Rob writes: Computer Business Review is reporting that a rumor has surfaced that Oracle is preparing a bid to take over SAP and bizarre though the idea seems, it helped send the German stock market up. Although Oracle would dearly like to remove its closest competitor from the market, there is unlikely to be any substance to the speculation because the combination of the two enterprise application leaders would create a near-monopoly and would almost certainly be seen as breaching antitrust law in both the US and Europe.

Submission + - Impeachment: Good for Republicans and Democrats

CausalCrunch writes: "A debate is raging as to whether the U.S. should impeach George W. Bush, but it's not a partisan debate. Democrats and Republicans fall on both sides of the issue. Members of both parties opposing impeachment seem to be worried that pursuing impeachment will hurt their chances in the 2008 presidential elections and beyond. Given that the argument seems to be turning on whether impeachment is good for winning elections, it seems odd that so many members of both parties are in agreement about opposing it. Obviously, one of the parties will get a political bump. (READ MORE)"
