Submission + - New computer users: What to do when they need help

Bomarc writes: "A relative of mine recently wanted to purchase a computer. She asked me for advice, so I recommended a "Dell"; business system, with some 'extras' for her to get going. I had her purchase the system with 'Vista'. Dell was selected as they tout their award winning support.

Well, I've had two calls, and I'm now concerned. The first was that the mouse didn't move. (Reboot the system, cleared the problem). When the system was booting, the Google tool bar faulted on boot up. (To much spam-ware on the system from Dell?). So I had her remove it. That reveled another problem, which I skimmed over, and came back to haunt me.

So here is the problem — Brand new system — with a brand new user, trying to get to their Gmail account, and you are talking on the phone.
Directions: Start I.E. Type in the "Address bar"....
...Where is the address bar?

Microsoft failed to label the address bar. The default web page is "MSN". You can't say "next to the blue arrow"; as there isn't one. You can't say "at the top", as they both are. And with such things as search box on the top of the screen, they have two of them.
MS has also changed the GUI layout just enough that I can't use the same commands from "XP" to "Vista"; and most of the changes are annoying enough to make a 30 second 'sure I'll help' to a 60 minute system reconfiguration. Suggestions, ideas? Which L-CD should I download — & burn for her for a Dell system?"
The Internet

SEATTLE (AP) — A 27-year-old man described as one of the world's top spammers was arrested Wednesday, a development that federal authorities said could lead to an immediate, perceptible decrease in the amount of junk e-mail winging its way across the Web.

"He's one of the top 10 spammers in the world," said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company's Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. "He's a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day.""

Submission + - eBay crashes - hard, All 'Live Auctions' are down

Bomarc writes: "eBay live auctions got off to a slow start this morning (10/21/06); however they quickly came to a halt with the error message. The auction that was going tried to continue with phone in; and just keep selling. Three hours later there is a hanging message — 'Sorry for the delay. We are hoping to be up soon with lot 56'. (Note: I'm using my Geocites account to host the screen shots; be kind)"
