Nebulo writes: Popular geek-technical-libertarian website ./ (pronounced "slash-dot") has apparently been taken over by a mysterious figure calling himself "Cmdr. Taco". "Slashdot" is a news aggregator, providing a clearing house for links to sites that contain "news for nerds, stuff that matters" for over ten years. Normally, stories are submitted by readers and later reviewed and approved by a cadre of editors; however, in the early morning hours of September 2, 2010, all stories on the site became to show "Cmdr. Taco" as the approving editor. Details are sketchy, with no word from "Taco" on his demands or agenda after this unexpected coup, and there is no word on the safety of the former editors.

Isn't that a big part of what he's saying - that some algorithms should be written in a non-portable way so they maximize performance? For example, a different system might implement VM in a way that eliminates his performance gains.

In this case, we would explicitly be placing these attributes into this being's personality for our own convenience. On the other hand, for whatever reason, we *evolved* to prefer the diet that we do - no one (apparently) guided our evolutionary path so that we would prefer to eat a particular diet.
Ergo, there's a real difference here. Is it ethical to engineer the consciousness of another being to serve our needs?
