Submission + - Fabulous MIT Software Makes Selfies Professional Portraits

Ajay Anand writes: Researchers at MIT have developed this cool algorithm (PDF) to convert humble snaps to dramatic images in a way such that style of any professional photographer can be mimicked. It uses dense mapping between a given selfie and an example portrait using 66 facial features and turns the selfie into a similar looking portrait.

Quoting the authors, "Headshot portraits are a popular subject in photography but to achieve a compelling visual style requires advanced skills that a casual photographer will not have ... We introduce a technique to transfer the style of an example headshot photo onto a new one. This can allow one to easily reproduce the look of renowned artists." Link to the video. MIT news link.

You didn't have to write such a long explanation to my small comment. Whatever you have written is all well known. JavaScript got its JIT module some time around 2008-2009 while PHP is still trying to locate the axle. JavaScript is beautiful not just from the programming point of view but also as an embedded language in virtually any software developed in any programming language. You are correct that Node.js is still getting there but only time will tell what will dominate the already divided market.

Let an author release first book in public domain. If readers really like that work, there will be enough fans to fund the next work which can again be released in public domain (as it has already been paid for).

Had this model been an ancient and well established old model of publishing all works of art there was never a need of IP or any domain other than public domain.

I admit having a journey that contrasts yours (switching from OS X to Unity to Gnome). I also admit that many recent functionalities and features of Unity and Gnome are more aligned with those of OS X than Windows (XP/7). And this shift from Window-ish alignment to OS X-ish alignment is what has been major design shift that has disappointed many users. I honestly believe that both Unity and Gnome have reached a point where they are now better than OS X itself.

Having used OS X exclusively for 4 years it took me not even a week to like, love and admire Unity. Try Unity and you'll know how much OS X sucks. Try Gnome and you'll know that Unity sucks too! And both LXDE/XFCE rule systems with low memory. It's not merely a passionate statement, its direct experience with wide array of old and new devices.
