JavaScript got its JIT module some time around 2008-2009 while PHP is still trying to locate the axle. JavaScript is beautiful not just from the programming point of view but also as an embedded language in virtually any software developed in any programming language. You are correct that Node.js is still getting there but only time will tell what will dominate the already divided market.

Why not use Node.js that has already got the wheel (JIT) rather than drilling holes in PHP to fit an axle?

I admit having a journey that contrasts yours (switching from OS X to Unity to Gnome). I also admit that many recent functionalities and features of Unity and Gnome are more aligned with those of OS X than Windows (XP/7). And this shift from Window-ish alignment to OS X-ish alignment is what has been major design shift that has disappointed many users. I honestly believe that both Unity and Gnome have reached a point where they are now better than OS X itself.

Having used OS X exclusively for 4 years it took me not even a week to like, love and admire Unity. Try Unity and you'll know how much OS X sucks. Try Gnome and you'll know that Unity sucks too! And both LXDE/XFCE rule systems with low memory. It's not merely a passionate statement, its direct experience with wide array of old and new devices.

Even in 3D graphics and image processing one can not afford the slow performance of STL. Imagine if a feature detection algorithm on a single high resolution image takes 20% less time without STL, one will go for it. Practically it takes at least one order of magnitude less time.
