Wouldn't work with wires. Line losses would eat up all the power. Perhaps if LEO microwave power relay stations became a reality, useful energy could be moved from one side of the planet to the other. Don't hold your breath...
Most likely, we will go to amorphous distribution systems where each business or household would have some combination of wind, solar, or fuel cell power that is bi-directionally tied to a local distribution level grid. (already in place). When you have an outage, you sponge off your neighbors until you are up again and then either pay back in kind or get a bill for the power. Also for local grid security, there would be a fuel cell at the distribution substation to cover widespread outages.
The bulk transmission system is based on 80 year old technologies. It needs to be retired!!!
