not to mention, Ouya came along the time when both M$ and $ony were going to force always on walled garden camera integration into your living space... and for a lot of people it was a FU to the establishment and mayhave forced some change on the online behavior from the said vendors. It was to establish a third (4th 5th) console option showing there was demand for a less anal intrusive product on the market... if that is Razor or Ouya or steambox or whatever else... the point has been made.

Kepler 452b is located 1,000 light years away, is 60% larger than Earth, and orbits Kepler 452 at a distance similar to that between Earth and the Sun. "It is the first terrestrial planet in the habitable zone around a star very similar to the Sun," says Douglas Caldwell, an astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.

Eloking writes: TORONTO – On Thursday, NASA announced that scientists analyzing four years’ worth of data from the Kepler Space Telescope – which searched for planets around other stars – have released a new catalogue of exoplanet candidates, including an Earth-like planet that orbits a star similar to our own sun.

Of the 500 possible planets, 12 are less than twice the diameter of Earth in that zone.

Kepler 452b is the first one to be confirmed as a planet, lying 1,400 light-years from Earth. This planet is particularly interesting as its star is similar to our own sun. It is just 10 per cent brighter and four per cent more massive. It also orbits its star at the same distance that we do our sun.

An anonymous reader writes: Google researchers have asked 231 security experts and 294 web-users who aren't security experts about their security best practices, and the list of top ones for each group differs considerably. Experts recognize the benefits of updates, while non-experts are concerned about the potential risks of software updates. Non-experts are less likely to use password managers: some find them difficult to use, some don't realize how helpful they can be, and others are simply reluctant to (as they see it) "write" passwords down. Another interesting thing to point out is that non-experts love and use antivirus software.

Mickeycaskill writes: Researchers HP Security discovered "significant vulnerabilities" in every single smartwatch they tested, claiming they pose a major security risk for users.

The team is concerned by an apparent lack of authorisation and authentication provisions, encrypted firmware updates and protection for personal data. When coupled with poor password choices, HP says wearables are as much a target for cyber criminals as muggers on the street.

“As the adoption of smartwatches accelerates, the platform will become vastly more attractive to those who would abuse that access, making it critical that we take precautions when transmitting personal data or connecting smartwatches into corporate networks," said HP's Jason Schmitt.

HughPickens.com writes: Michael Wolff writes in the NY Times that online-media revolutionaries once figured they could eat TV's lunch by stealing TV's business model with free content supported by advertising. But online media is now drowning in free, and internet traffic has glutted the ad market, forcing down rates. Digital publishers, from The Guardian to BuzzFeed, can stay ahead only by chasing more traffic — not loyal readers, but millions of passing eyeballs, so fleeting that advertisers naturally pay less and less for them. Meanwhile, the television industry has been steadily weaning itself off advertising — like an addict in recovery, starting a new life built on fees from cable providers and all those monthly credit-card debits from consumers. Today, half of broadcast and cable's income is non-advertising based. And since adult household members pay the cable bills, TV content has to be grown-up content: "The Sopranos," "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "The Wire," "The Good Wife."

So how did this tired, postwar technology seize back the crown? Television, not digital media, is mastering the model of the future: Make 'em pay. And the corollary: Make a product that they'll pay for. BuzzFeed has only its traffic to sell — and can only sell it once. Television shows can be sold again and again, with streaming now a third leg to broadcast and cable, offering a vast new market for licensing and syndication. Television is colonizing the Internet and people still spend more time watching television than they do on the Internet and more time on the Internet watching television. "The fundamental recipe for media success, in other words, is the same as it used to be," concludes Wolff, "a premium product that people pay attention to and pay money for. Credit cards, not eyeballs."
