Comment Libertarian talking point goes down in flames (Score 1) 720

So the idea that a higher minimum wage would drive automation is bullshit, as we suspected all along. Companies would automate jobs if they were being paid $2/hour. Humans get sick, they have a bad day and require training. Humans need managers, machines just need maintenance.

It was always a bullshit talking point. How many companies have a receptionist these days? Or a switchboard operator? A higher minimum wage never explained ATMs and online banking.

Maybe it was just Koch brothers brand bullshit all along.

And most banks still consider knowledge of your birthday as an authentication question. Not identification, authentication.

I know of a few big banks that only allow numeric digits! "Between 8 and 12 NUMERIC DIGITS".

Poteltial MINIMUM security level -- 4 character password.

One of those institutions considers the account number itself as some "sup3r secr3t" number that only you are supposed to know, they warn you "don't let anyone know, keep your record of the account number secure".

Comment WHY (Score 3, Interesting) 347

This is a terrible idea. The point is that the 'Modern UI' is designed around full screen apps. But system configuration is one thing that enormously benefits from opening up windows alongside the control panel (for example, to follow a set of instructions), opening up multiple control panels to refer to each other, and so on. Microsoft is basically directly removing usability.

Furthermore, the city has not presented data on whether or not those areas have become safer.

That's because they haven't, otherwise the city would be taking a victory lap. That's because gadget enforcement can't change human nature.

We won't see any real safety improvements until we take human nature out of driving and turn it over to machines.

Comment Re:The mention of Valentina Tereshkova is ridiculo (Score 1) 200

Right, exactly. What the USSR and the US chose to do in the space race was to symbolize those aspects of their national character that they wished to promote. That the Soviets sent the first woman, made a pretty clear message - that at that time at least, the USSR was ahead of the US in terms of gender relations.

Those factors ceased to be relevant when military operations stopped being about people walking a hundred miles on foot and then clubbing each other in the head with heavy bits of metal.

Smaller? Well that means they are a smaller target, you can fit more of them into a transport, they have more room to move around the interior of a fighting vehicle. Strength matters somewhat but smaller people also eat less, and so are a reduced logistical burden.

In terms of speed and endurance, it is far from clear that women are inferior men:

Besides, armies are not composed of average men - and they would not be replaced with average women. Differences between men and women *on average* are meaningless. The average soldier can be easily replaced with exceptional women.

Comment Re:Engineers have no future. (Score 5, Insightful) 148

Agreed. A manager who says that turnover is not a problem is a manager that has no inkling of what engineers do, what exactly their company produces, or how badly they are in trouble when knowledge and experience walk out the door. Either that, or they're lying to your face.

There's that tipping point when the work gets harder, the code is even more rotted, the "process" is even more constricting, because they know something is wrong but they need to "measure" everything to figure out why. That's when people are running, not walking out the door.

Comment As if we weren't ignoring them before (Score 5, Funny) 406

We were ignoring seat belt puppet show long before the FAA loosened restrictions on gadgets. Besides, if there ever actually was an accident, the chances of needing any of that safety equipment is pretty negligible. I don't think the little oxygen mask is going to be any match for blunt force trauma. At normal airliner speeds, the little mask would be wearing you for protection.
