Submission + - Nature TV shows rely on dirty tricks (mongabay.com) 2

terrancem writes: Wildlife filmmaker Chris Palmer says animal documentaries rely on various tricks including the use of trained animals, staged scenes, and harassment. “If you see a close-up of a bear standing on his hind legs and roaring, what is likely going on is there is a trainer behind the scenes who is telling it what to do,” he confesses. But Palmer says these shows serve an important purpose: promoting wildlife conservation.

Submission + - Baggage Fees Send Airline Profits Soaring (chicagotribune.com)

Pickens writes: "The Chicago Tribune reports that the 20 largest U.S. carriers collected $906.4 million in baggage-related charges during the third quarter, a 23 percent jump from 2009 results, according to data released Monday by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. New baggage fees for international routes, a rebound in air travel and passenger frustration over limited overhead space in airplane cabins all contributed to the skyrocketing fee income, observers said. The volume of luggage handled by American Airlines has leveled off this year, averaging 0.8 to 0.9 checked bags per passenger, or roughly 205,000 checked bags per day, down from about 1.1 checked bags in 2008, when American and other major carriers turned to fees to offset losses prompted by high oil prices and the recession. And while analysts question what else carriers can do to wring greater baggage income from passengers, no carrier has followed Spirit Air Line's example and begun charging passengers for carry-ons. Spirit's new policy appears to have reaped rewards for the ultra-low-cost carrier. After Spirit rolled out the new charges Aug. 1, its baggage fee revenue rose to $22.9 million during the third quarter, up 36 percent from the previous quarter."

Submission + - Oracle and Apple Announce OpenJDK Project for OSX 1

jasonmanley writes: "Good news all around! Oracle and Apple announced the OpenJDK project for Mac OS X. Apple will contribute most of the key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X, including a 32-bit and 64-bit HotSpot-based Java virtual machine, class libraries, a networking stack and the foundation for a new graphical client. OpenJDK will make Apple's Java technology available to open source developers so you can access and contribute to the effort.

Furthermore, the JCP Executive Committe has approved the JSR "quartet" for Java SE 7 and Java SE 8. With this ratification, the Java standard will progress through the JCP while the open source reference implementation will be delivered through the OpenJDK project. See you on OpenJDK!"

Submission + - Sheriff's online database leaks info on Informants (npr.org)

Tootech writes: A Colorado sheriff's online database mistakenly revealed the identities of confidential drug informants and listed phone numbers, addresses and Social Security numbers of suspects, victims and others interviewed during criminal investigations, authorities said.

The breach potentially affects some 200,000 people, and Mesa County sheriff's deputies have been sifting through the database to determine who, if anyone, is in jeopardy.

"That in itself is probably the biggest concern we have, because we're talking about people's personal safety," Sheriff Stan Hilkey said.

The FBI and Google Inc. are trying to determine who accessed the database, the sheriff said. Their concern: That someone may have copied it and could post it, WikiLeaks-style, on the Internet.

"The truth is, once it's been out there and on the Internet and copied, you're never going to regain total control," Hilkey said.

Thousands of pages of confidential information were vulnerable from April until Nov. 24, when someone notified authorities after finding their name on the Internet. Officials said the database was accessed from within the United States, as well as outside the country, before it was removed from the server.

Submission + - On-Line Flight Planning Under Attack via Patent (aero-news.net)

An anonymous reader writes: FlightPrep an Oragon based aviation company was pounded by the aviation community for threatening legal action against http://www.runwayfinder.com/ a popular non-profit web base flight planning site. Many aviators use the site to construct flight scenarios and try out different routes to find the safest and most efficient way to fly from point A to B

From the article:
"The damage appears to be heavy as far as FlightPrep is concerned. A massive amount of support rallied to the defense of RunwayFinder.com, while the patent holder, 'FlightPrep' attempted to post their defense/rationale on their corporate blog, shortly thereafter... but WITHOUT allowing comments onsite (and judging by comments elsewhere, they probably got tired of the invective... as for the moment, it would be hard to find a more unpopular aero-company than FlightPrep)."

Submission + - Ukraine to Open Chernobyl Area to Tourists (washingtonpost.com)

Pickens writes: "The Washington Post reports that Ukraine plans to open up the sealed zone around the Chernobyl reactor to visitors who wish to learn more about the tragedy that occurred nearly a quarter of a century ago. Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Yulia Yershova says experts are developing travel routes that will be both medically safe and informative.. "There are things to see there if one follows the official route and doesn't stray away from the group," says Yershova. "Though it is a very sad story." The ministry also says it hopes to finish building a new safer shell for the exploded reactor by 2015 that will cover the original iron-and-concrete structure hastily built over the reactor that has been leaking radiation, cracking and threatening to collapse. About 2,500 employees maintain the remains of the now-closed nuclear plant, working in shifts to minimize their exposure to radiation and several hundred evacuees have returned to their villages in the area despite a government ban."

Submission + - US Government spying on T-Mobile VOIP subscribers?

stavrica writes: I found a new entry in my T-Mobile @Home Linksys routing table I hadn't seen before:

10.160.18.0 / 255.255.255.0 / 7.3.4.186 / WAN (Internet)

Strange routes showing up uninvited in static routing tables is definitely a BAD THING, particularly on a firewall. An ARIN lookup on 7.3.4.186 shows it's owned by the DoD Network Information Center (DNIC).

The T-Mobile @Home router at my church routing table likewise shows the following similar entries:

10.160.18.0 / 255.255.255.0 / 7.2.145.46 ppp0
10.160.18.0 / 255.255.255.0 / 7.2.130.7 / ppp0

There is no way to remove these routes. Suddenly, re-flashing the Linksys firmware was beginning to seem like a really good idea. If only... It turns out that T-Mobile has been auto-updating the firmware on all their @Home routers, first to version 1.00.20 --and then to 1.00.21, prompting one poster to even beg:

Please for the love of GOD stop the auto updating, udnp completely fails making my whole pc run snail like... on .15 it's fine like it has been for ages, but i can only keep that on for about 5-10 minutes before it's updated again......

To mitigate this invasion of privacy, I split the 10.160.18.0 network into two subnets, and routed them to an unused private address:

10.160.18.0 / 255.255.255.128 / 192.168.255.123 / WAN (Internet)
10.160.18.128 / 255.255.255.128 / 192.168.255.123 / WAN (Internet)
>

Can anyone else with a T-Mobile @Home Linksys VOIP router corroborate my observations? Both T-Mobile @Home routers are registered to my account. It's possible that I'm being monitored, but I doubt it.

Among other things, DataWiki seeks to provided easy input/output of outside data, including, it says, Twitter. It already does this with Buzz, among other things, but DataWiki would appear to be more geared toward large enterprises than individual users.
