This is exactly what we get, when services are tried to be run too efficiently. Like utilizing nearly 100% of resources provided by server. If server is down for just a while, it'll take ages to catch up. At least three news servers which I were using had all normal load over 90%. Which meant that if server went down for a day, it took easily one to two weeks to catch up!

That's what is done in Helsinki. Actually data processing can be very economical and green. If the waste heat generated from process will be used for something useful.

It's just logical to use waste heat from any other sources (like industry processes) is being re-used in similar way.

I'm happy with my G.Bond ADSL2+ connection which gives me full 48/6 Mbps pretty cheaply. With cable there are always problems with upstream performance and latency. Using DSL I get steady 10 ms round-trip latency (DSLAM).

DSL isn't broadband? Then I assume that in US broadband is at least 100Mbit/s full duplex connection, right? Preferably using FTTH.

Everybody knew this was coming. So that's why projects like Freenet, I2P, Tor and GNUnet has been developed and running for long time. It's bit harder to take those under control. Those seem to be working pretty well. I have personally tried all and using some currently.

I have lately opted for Vimeo. Google HD videos are sometimes really slow to load. I don't know why. Everything seems to be ok, but video just isn't loading as expected. With Vimeo I haven't had that problem ever. Vimeo image quality is also clearly superb. Content quality is also clearly better.

So? What's new? Our building got renewed about 6 years ago. At that point we found out exactly what they say. Cellphone signal was gone for two of the three operator available here. Reception was weak for the only available operator. Out at yard all operators gave full reception!

Reason? Thermal radiation insulation using very thin aluminium foil. It's not only in walls also windows are protected. Open window and placing phone just about 5 cm outside, full reception. Close window and place phone 5 cm inside, no reception at all. It's pretty clear situation.

Solution: Buying two mobile antennas and and about 20 cm of cable. Drill hole through the wall, Place another antenna outside, insert cable, place another antenna inside. That's it. Now you have passive pass through for the signal.

P.S. This solution works very well for cellars and basements too, if you want to have signal where it isn't normally available.

Fuse-NTFS-3G makes my system really crawl when there is USB-disk IO. UI and everything else is totally stalled for long periods. I'm not Linux guru, but I just confirm that I'm also expering IO issues even when system load should be pretty low. Just to mention a very bad app, I'll say Evolution. If there is any heavy disk I/O it becomes ultra sluggish. And you're asking for coffee break especially when you're changing from mail folder to another or deleting messages. I was practically forced to use ionice with any disk to maintain acceptable performance with Evolution. (2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux / GNOME evolution 2.28.3)
