Comment Re:you can save a ton of $ (Score 1) 320

My computer is hooked up to my TV. Most of the stuff you get over the air isn't 1080 anyway. Netflix has plenty of HD stuff. I do hulu, netflix, and other streaming sites. Costs me $8 a month. For how much content I get, HD cable can go fuck itself in the ass for all I care. Savings far outweighs the benefit of a super sharp picture.

I wish they'd improve the Base application. It's horrendously slow and clunky and has a horrible interface. I can't stand that I have to right click on the table name and hit paste to paste data into a table, rather than just doing it directly in the the table view editor (the way most people would think to do it).

Comment 50K is low? (Score 1) 235

Since when is 50K a low salary? I know programmers with CS degrees that get paid less than that. I also know professional AV specialists that do network and av drops that only get paid about 40k a year. 50K is pretty good for a skilled labor job if you ask me. They're not engineers or scientists, so they don't get engineer and scientist pay. They get damn good technician pay.

I transferred my domains out of Go Daddy today. I don't care if they've "changed" their stance on SOPA. They supported it before and that's terrible enough. It would be interesting to see just how many domains they lose because of this.

Submission + - Sony Demonstrates Paper-fueled Battery (gizmag.com)

Zothecula writes: We've heard of gadgets being powered by some pretty crazy stuff, but how about paper? Sony recently showed off a new bio-cell battery that breaks down paper in order to create power. A paper battery sounds a little bit far-fetched, but the technology works, and could potentially change how we power devices in the future.

Submission + - Subway P.O.S. Terminals Hacked from Romania

Admiral Lazzurs writes: "In yet another case of computer security causing company embrassment Subway and other retailers have had their P.O.S. terminals compromised recently. In this story from Ars Technica it is made clear that a heavy price was paid for not applying simple security measured to their infrastructure. The question to be asked is how many more of these breaches before our industry starts taking security seriously and worth investment."
Hardware

Submission + - Best modern hardware to run Windows XP

tobyp writes: "I need to update the hardware in a handful of computers running Windows XP. I do not have the option of using a more modern version of Windows because these machines are used in a recording studio and have customised PCI boards which won't work with Vista/7. I need at least two "normal" PCI slots, an IDE interface (they have to work with a particular model of Plextor CD-RW drive), mirrored SATA hard drives and generally as much stability as possible. My first attempt took a lot of time because although I tried to follow the instructions to load the correct drivers during the Windows install (both using a floppy and creating a slip-streamed SP3 CD) I could not get the SATA RAID working and had to settle for using the disks in IDE mode. So who is the best for really stable XP drivers for their new hardware? Any other tips or recommendations?"
