Comment Slashdot Takes Next Step After "Anonymous Coward" (Score 3, Insightful) 187

Slashdot, obviously, has to innovate in order to stay current. Thus, they are now taking the next step after "Anonymous Cowards". The new "Identified Troll" feature will include interviews of people who have prostituted their personal credibility to some company's calculated disinformation campaign.

I was wondering when any former nukes would respond. I was a submarine nuke electrician. In the nuke world they can drop a dump truck full of knowledge on you quickly and most nukes can retain and use it. Also, the troubleshooting that I learned and used has really helped me. I use a loose version of the six step troubleshooting procedure I learned in "A" school when I approach a broken system.

Comment Do longevity tests account for crappy power? (Score 2) 602

CFLs, of all brands, have not lasted nearly as long as advertised at my house. I don't think I've had any last more than a year. However, the power at my house is terrible -- lights flicker and dim several times a day, and I completely lose power several times a year. All the computers are on UPSes, but it would be prohibitive to put all the lights on one. Old fashioned, incandescent light bulbs seem much more robust than at least CFLs, and I'm not too excited to test LEDs. So, do any of these lab tests which promise CFLs and LED that last for year test with real-world power sources?

Comment Debian GNOME needs some attention (Score 3, Interesting) 403

After something like 20 years I finally found a system that won't run Debian unstable right now. My Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 magnesium tablet + iKey Jumpseat magnesium keyboard. Systemd and GDM break. Bought (for less than full price) because I am a frequent traveler and speaker and really do need something you can drop from 6 feet and pour coffee over have it keep working.

But because of this bug I have ubuntu at the moment, and am not having fun and am eager to return to Debian.
