Submission + - Obama Responsible for Gulf Oil Spill (wsws.org)

An anonymous reader writes: In 2009, the Obama administration intervened to support the reversal of a court order that would have halted offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Obama’s Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who has long had close ties to the industry, specifically cited BP’s Deepwater Horizon operation as one that should be allowed to go forward, according to a group involved in the court case.

Submission + - Sony Sued Over Linux Removal On PS3 (examiner.com)

zepo1a writes: Snip from article: "Court files reveal that Sony will appear in court on August 25th and September 1st, 2010 to face the charges brought against them. In a http://ia331218.us.archive.org/2/items/gov.uscourts.cand.226894/gov.uscourts.cand.226894.1.0.pdf seventeen page long case file, everything is carefully documented about the feature being touted as a key component of the PS3 and why it was unlawful to remove the feature from current PS3 units. In the case filing, the plaintiffs claims the removal of the 'OS' feature causes them to lose money and that Sony changed the system settings and more.

Submission + - Apple allows only "approved software" for OSX 10.7 (rixstep.com)

angelfly writes: Apple seems to be moving in a direction to lock down OSX the same way they've locked down the iPhone and iPad. With 10.7 only approved software will be allowed to run. Freely installing software will require jailbreaking the OS.

Submission + - Google browser plugin autoupdates, wipes tracks

SemperCogito writes: So I come back to my MacBook after some time away, unlock the screen, and see some messages from the "Growl" hardware notifier that a strange Google volume has been mounted, and then unmounted, while I was away.

Now, I stopped updating Google Earth when they added their automatic software update "feature", which you must consent to or it won't install the app. OK, no app then! I do NOT like the idea of giving any vendor carte blanche to install stuff without telling me.

I looked at the running processes, and there were no google ones running. Looked in the logs, no google strings found.

This is looking like malware — something installed files with no tracks left — so I poke around, and consult with a colleague. Some testing shows the only new file that has appeared is the same one you get when you go manually install the Google Voice and Video browser plugin, aka googletalkbrowserplugin.plugin. However, my manual installation left nice log messages from the Installer.

Then I see this, dated yesterday (21-April-10), at http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/chat/thread?tid=7931301976c11fc1&hl=en

"Yesterday, we released the 1.1.2 update for the Google voice and video chat plug-in. This update includes all of the new features of version 1.1.1 and fixes the issues that some users with 1.1.1 were experiencing with their browser not recognizing the plug-in. All current installations will automatically update within the next day or two. If you don't want to wait, you can visit http://www.google.com/chat/video and re-run the installer."

I'll be damned — a browser plugin that auto-updates, attaining root privileges in the process, and wipes its tracks!

This makes me Very Unhappy. It modified my computer without asking and wasted over an hour of my time. Why was there nothing in the logs? Better yet, why didn't I get a "Google Talk plugin wants to update, OK?" request?

Needless to say said plugin is gone from my MacBook.

Submission + - Wikileaks Releases Murder Video (collateralmurder.com)

linguizic writes: Today Wikileaks released the video of US military firing large caliber weapons into a crowd that included two children as well as a photojournalist and a driver for Reuters. Wikileaks maintains that this video was covered up by the US Military when Reuters asked for an official investigation. This is the same video that supposedly has made the editors of Wikileaks a target of the State Department and/or the CIA as was discussed on Slashdot here: http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/03/24/1321224/Wikileaks-Receiving-Gestapo-Treatment.

Submission + - PhotoNest: A new iPhone app that offers a cool new (photonestapp.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Hey guys! Love your blog! Just wanted to let you know about my iPhone app that I made. I was laid off from my job recently and took everything I had in savings and started a little company called MindTapp to make iPhone apps. Our first app is called PhotoNest and it offers a cool new way to view pictures your friends post to Twitter with a photo timeline you can flick through, as well as allowing you to upload photos to your Twitter account. We ran out of money for marketing and I'm trying to get PhotoNest out in front of as many people as possible so hopefully we can move money from sales back into advertising and feature updates. If you guys like it I'd love a review :) I'm sure you get a lot of requests for these but we really need it. We are a very small company and very broke. I think it’s a cool idea and I hope you guys like it! Let me know if you have any questions at all! Thanks so much for your time!

Here is a promo code so you can get the app for free! Let me know if you need more :)

Latvian "Robin Hood" Hacker Leaks Bank Details 170

eldavojohn writes "Move over Russell Crowe, an anonymous hacker in Latvia is being hailed as a real life modern Robin Hood. The hacker refers to himself as 'Neo,' claims allegiance with the Fourth Awakening People's Army, and is outing banks that are capitalizing off of the horrible economic status Latvia is currently suffering from. No word on how he is acquiring the information but it is slowly being leaked to TV sources via Twitter and the common people love him. The hacker is thought to be based in Britain but a TV reporter pointed out the fine line Neo is walking, 'On the one hand of course he has stolen confidential data ... and he actually has committed a crime. But at the same time there is value for the public in the sense that now a lot of information gets disclosed and the whole system maybe becomes a little more transparent.' An example of a juicy tidbit he revealed is that managers of a Latvian bank did not take the salary cuts they promised they would after the government bailed them out of economic trouble. You can imagine that taxpayers were upset and thankful they knew this information."

Nokia, Intel Merge Maemo, Moblin Into MeeGo 162

AVee writes "Intel and Nokia just announced a new project called MeeGo. MeeGo is supposed to be the result of merging Maemo and Moblin, bringing together the best pieces of those (already quite similar platforms). Interestingly this means that Intel will be sponsoring a mobile Linux distro which will run on ARM."
