Journal Journal: Updating FreeBSD ports on a p4 sucks 1

Evan though KDE runs just fine on the p4, anytime I have to perform major port updates. ITS SUCKS. It takes days. in this case, its the upgrade of Perl 5.10 to 5.12, and than the recursive update. God, this blows chunks.

All though, portmaster makes it much more bearable. At least when an error occurs, the updates do not continue. This way I know exactly where I am at and how much more has to be done. Unlike portupdate

Journal Journal: Jailbreaking iPhone to become legal

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128772296
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38413597/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/ From NPR

The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material.

Both previous and current such rulings can be found here. U.S. Copyright Office
With the following being the exemption noted on MSNBC and NPR.

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

Journal Journal: Upgrading to FreeBSD 8.1

In the middle of the CVS update right now. Considering I already have 8.1 pre release, this is taking longer than I thought it would. Will let this run all night, and than upgrade tomorrow.

Should have done a backup prior to this. But, this is a desktop that is being updated and the last major port install had a backup done afterward. Nothing lost if I have to go to that backup to fix.

Update: 2010/07/25 - I had previously installed pidgin and the mbpidgin add on. There were issues where every time I tried to log into twitter, it would crash pidgin. Funny thing is, I have the latest version on windows and this is not an issue. What ever. But, when rebooting I started hanging up in the log in process.

  • Restored back to previous backup from 2010/07/08
  • Upgrade to 8.1 current complete
  • New backup being performed

Port upgrade and subsequent backup may not occur. This is an upgrade from 8.1 pre, and I have been upgrading the ports as I go.

  • Will check ports to see if any need updating after backup
  • New backup will be performed after port upgrades are complete.

Journal Journal: So much for hosting blogs that use wordpress

http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=10/07/22/1935248
WordPress Creator GPL Says WP Template Must Be GPL'd

This is all about various themes that have been developed for WordPress which are not of GPL license.

If I host a blog web site, and the client uses one of these themes that are not GPL licensed, am I liable to be sued by the wordpress creator?

Simple answer to this, if I host blogs. It will not be with word press.

Another reason that I think the BSD license is much better for promoting open source than GPL ever will be. Nazi's versus the true open source.

Posting here because I moderated that story.

Journal Journal: And you thought only earthlings wasted natural resources. 1

If Mars Attacks â¦
Do we have an alien-contact contingency plan?

The guts of this article is what are we going to do if we are contacted by aliens from another world.

What if aliens were to make contactâ"do we have an E.T. contingency plan?

Kinda? Maybe? Could be? Never know?
Officially, the answer is no. What the pentagon has drawn up, is possibly another story. Who knows what secret contigency plans the pentagon has.

What I find interesting are the comments from Stephen Hawking:

believe that contact with intelligent aliens would end badly for usâ"we'd be the Native Americans to the alien Europeans. "I imagine they might exist in massive ships," Hawking said recently,

  • "having used up all the resources from their home planet.

Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach."

I know that the romantics that think that aliens would have no evil intentions in contacting us, but get real people. The only reason you explore the unknown is to expand what you do own. Be it knowledge, resources, or slave labor.
