[...] To be very clear, this isn't about changing the company name or focus — we are Sun, we are a systems company, and we will always be a derivative of the students that created us, Stanford University Network is here to stay. But we are no longer simply a workstation company, nor a company whose products can be limited by one category — and Java does a better job of capturing exactly that sentiment than any other four letter symbol.'

Submission + - Amazon to Sell Music Without Copy Protection

bzlman writes: The NY Times reports that Amazon will begin selling music "later this year" with no DRM at all. From the article: "The music will be from a major label, EMI, and 12,000 smaller independent music companies that have chosen not to use the copy-restricting software known as digital rights management, or D.R.M."We are offering a great selection of music that our customers love in a way they clearly desire, which is D.R.M.-free, so they can play it on any device they own today or in the future," said Bill Carr, Amazon's vice president for digital media." Though the other labels are still reluctant, "Mr. Carr of Amazon.com said he hoped that today's announcement would persuade other music labels to take part." The final nail for DRM music? We shall see.

linuxwrangler writes: Jack Valenti, the son of Sicilian immigrants who started out sweeping theater floors, won the Distinguished Flying Cross, was in President Kennedy's motorcade when he was assassinated, created the modern movie rating system, and prior to retiring from the MPAA rose to become one of SlashDot's most hated is dead at age 85.
