Submission + - Storm Worm Turns To MP3s to Pump Up Stocks
An anonymous reader writes: Criminal gangs using zombie machines infected by the Storm worm have adopted a new technique to slip their messages past e-mail filters: MP3 files. The short 20-60 second audio files tout penny stocks in a pump-and-dump scam targeting EXTO.PK, the trading symbol for a tech firm in California. In an interview with the Washington Post, the company's CEO said they traced the whole scam back to St. Petersburg, Russia. From the story: "We hired a team of experts to look into this and found that it all started with a phantom server in St. Petersburg, Russia, that bounced it off servers in Argentina, and from there it started populating computers in North America via the Storm worm."
