Submission + - BioWare announces free DLC to add more to the Mass Effect 3 endings, with a Q&am (gamergaia.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The battle between angry fans and BioWare has been raging since the game's release over several issues, with the biggest being the disappointing ending. BioWare have stuck to their guns and stated that they won't make a new ending, but will release free DLC to add clarity to the existing ones.

Submission + - Best USB modem for international use?

An anonymous reader writes: I work in Afghanistan and our company network is rather restricted. I can access email and FB, as well as do my banking and other similarly necessary functions. However, i would like to be able to do some online gaming, watch YouTube, etc. Even some blogs are blocked on my network. I want to know what is the best USB modem i can find that won't cost an arm and a leg. AT&T is out of the question, $200/month for only 800MB of data, no bueno. XCOM Global has one that provides unlimited data, but is $12/day, with the insurance for the thing at $4/day. Way too expensive as i need this until at least the end of June, maybe longer depending on how long I stay in Afghanistan. Any suggestions Slashdotters?

Submission + - What monitoring platform should I invest time in learning? (nagios.org)

An anonymous reader writes: The company I've spent the last 9 months with use Nagios as their monitoring solution. I've been involved with other projects and unable to really invest any time into getting to grips with it — in fact most of the work on it seems to be done by a lone sysadmin or two!

Looking around the monitoring market there are an absolute plethora of options all selling themselves as the new defacto standard, and knowing Nagios basics like I do, some appear to be lots better in many respects. In fact, even within Nagios diversity is practically built-in what with it being just a scheduling engine.

Put simply, Nagios sells itself as the 'industry standard' (their words, not mine). Should I invest serious time in getting to grips with it, or is there a viable alternative I should be learning instead that will prove a better use of my time in the long run factoring in the possibility of switching companies to someone that may not use Nagios at all.

Lauren Weinstein writes: "Sunday, 1 April 2012 — MARINA DEL REY, California (ZAP) — In a stunning and unexpected announcement, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the immediate termination of its controversial and much criticized plan for a vast expansion of generic top-level Internet domain names (gTLDs), and has set an aggressive timetable for the dissolution of ICANN itself."

Submission + - EU investigating Motorola FRAND licensing after Microsoft and Apple complaints (reuters.com)

xonen writes: EU antitrust regulators may open an investigation into a patent dispute between Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc (MMI.N) to ensure patent holders do not thwart rivals, the EU's antitrust chief said on Friday.

Last month Microsoft took its case to the European Commission, saying Motorola Mobility was charging too much for use of its patents in Microsoft products.

Motorola Mobility said Apple had also complained to the EU watchdog about its patents.

Google Inc (GOOG.O), which is in the process of buying Motorola Mobility, has said it will offer Motorola patents on fair and reasonable terms once the deal is completed.

The EU watchdog, which is also investigating whether legal tactics used by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) against Apple breach EU antitrust rules, may open a second patent case into the sector, EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said.

"I am considering whether we need to investigate these complaints formally to help bring more clarity into this area of competition control," Almunia said in the text of a speech to be delivered at a conference in Washington.

"The holders of standard-essential patents have considerable market power. This market power can be used to harm competition ... I don't need to tell you that this is unacceptable, and I am determined to use antitrust enforcement to prevent such hold-up by patent holders," he said.

The Commission, which can fine companies up to 10 percent of their global turnover, has levied billions of euros in penalties against Microsoft, Intel (INTC.O) and others for breaching EU rules.

Comment length matters (Score 1) 837

It matters because the pairs are twisted with different step, resulting in difference in length of pairs, resulting in length restrictions. That limits length before all electrical theory does. However, if you cut long cable in the middle and solder pairs so to compensate length difference then it would work at three times longer distances than standards say. PS: Tested, confirmed.

Google Search Flagging Everything As Potentially Harmful 407

dowlingw writes "It looks like for the moment at least, all Google results are failing the malware checks and being listed with a warning 'This site may harm your computer,' including all pages from Google themselves. Users trying to visit pages at search results will only be able to proceed via manual manipulation of the search result link to remove the Google click-through (which is also broken). Until Google fixes this bug, it looks Google web search is useless." Update: 01/31 at 15:16 GMT by SS: The problem now appears to be fixed.
Update: 01/31 at 22:01 GMT by KD : Google has now posted an explanation, apologizing and taking responsibility for the "human error" that led to the problem.
