The problem is finding someone new willing to maintain the software. We have large systems running on big iron. The people who maintain it are getting older and fewer. We struggle trying to get someone new motivated to learn the technology. It's not an issue with the hardware, you can continue to upgrade that. It's finding someone who is willing to work in software that is no longer popular.

Hawaii is volcanic. The volcanoes are high, so you have to deal with a thin atmosphere. Unlike the arctic, you get more of a 12 hour dark/light cycle. These are all closer to Mars conditions than anywhere else you can find on Earth. You are going to land on Mars nearer the equator than the poles. But, of course, Hawaii is much hotter than Mars.

I don't see how that would be different from living here.

Or did it actually go into production?
