Submission + - Cleverbot Passes Turing Test (geekosystem.com)

kruhft writes: "It seems that Cleverbot, the chatbot so ready to admit that it was a unicorn during a discussion with itself, has passed the Turing test. This past Sunday, the 1334 votes from a Turing test held at the Techniche festival in Guwahati, India were released. They revealed that Cleverbot was voted to be human 59.3% of the time. Real humans did only slightly better and were assumed to be humans 63.3% of the time. That being the case, Cleverbot's success in conning people into thinking it was human is greater than chance, and therefore, one could argue that it has technically passed the Turning test."

Submission + - North Korea forces US reconnaissance plane to land (msn.com) 2

ToBeDecided writes: A US military reconessaince plane was reportedly forced to perform an emergency landing during a major military exercise near the North Korean border in March. As revealed by the South Korean defense ministry, a strong signal transmitted from the north disrupted GPS in the area surrounding the position of the RC-7B aircraft. Without information about their position, the pilots were forced to abort their mission and return to South Korea.
This leaves the question whether the US military would be able to perform operations in North Korea given how fragile their equipment seems to be.

Dell Reveals Specs For the Looking Glass Tablet 174

adeelarshad82 writes "Dell hasn't officially unveiled its Looking Glass tablet, but it's on record at the FCC. The spec sheets reveal a device with a 7-inch screen, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, and an SD card slot. The Looking Glass will likely be announced at next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is sure to have no shortage of new tablets. Dell filed the documents for device approval by the FCC on December 17. The Looking Glass is expected to be one of the first devices to pack an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, a powerful chip for mobile devices that can support both typical functions (like e-mail and Web browsing) as well as advanced graphics — all while preserving battery life."

Facing 16 Years In Prison For Videotaping Police 878

krou sends this snip from the Maine Civil Liberties Union: "The ACLU of Maryland is defending Anthony Graber, who faces as much as sixteen years in prison if found guilty of violating state wiretap laws because he recorded video of an officer drawing a gun during a traffic stop. ... Once [the Maryland State Police] learned of the video on YouTube, Graber's parents' house was raided, searched, and four of his computers were confiscated. Graber was arrested, booked, and jailed. Their actions are a calculated method of intimidation. Another person has since been similarly charged under the same statute. The wiretap law being used to charge Anthony Graber is intended to protect private communication between two parties. According to David Rocah, the ACLU attorney handling Mr. Graber's case, 'To charge Graber with violating the law, you would have to conclude that a police officer on a public road, wearing a badge and a uniform, performing his official duty, pulling someone over, somehow has a right to privacy when it comes to the conversation he has with the motorist.'" Here are a factsheet (PDF) on the case from the ACLU of Maryland, and the video at issue.

Cannabis also needs to be trimmed, dried and cured. Growing it is only half the battle. Also I'm unclear where GP gets '$3500' from...in fact I'm not even sure what he's saying would cost $3500... But in any case a 20g pack of marijuana cigarettes (at current street prices) would run $100-250, not $500. And we're ignoring the fact that a gram of cannabis can be stretched out into two or three 'sessions' pretty easily if it's any good at all.

"Now considering that this test is for the police force"

The MMPI is not 'for' the police force. It's a widely accepted personality assessment (the acronym stands for Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). I'm as paranoid as the next guy (the next guy being Alex Jones) but come on.

These arguments conveniently ignore the fact that this particular battery starts with an eight hour battery life. IF you use your laptop on battery power for more than four or five hours at a time battery wear might become an issue, after several years. Personally I'm perfectly happy with three or four hours.
