Submission + - Is America's military preparing for the last war and not the future? (thediplomat.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The US has been 'pivoting' and 're-balancing' to the Pacific region for sometime now. Militarily, America has developed an AirSea Battle concept to challenge China's military rise. This includes new drone-like long range bombers, cruise missiles, stealth subs etc. However, the concept may already be outdated at Cyber weapons can damage the command and control of any weapons system. America should instead develop a new AirSeaCyber concept to defeat enemies around the globe. If your enemies computers don't work because they are infected with malware and viruses, then you win the war without firing a shot.

Submission + - MacBook Pro with Retina display video review (bgr.com)

redkemper writes: This week we take a look at Apple’s brand new MacBook Pro with Retina display, arguably the best laptop ever made. It’s thinner, it’s lighter, and it’s borderline insane in many ways — a whopping 2880 x 1800-pixel display, no ethernet port, no optical drive, and it starts at $2,199. You won’t want to miss our walkthrough...

Submission + - Fedora Introduces Offline Updates (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: "Thanks to a new feature approved this week by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee, you won't hear Fedora 18 users bragging about systems that have been running continuously for months on end. 'Fedora's new Offline System Update feature will change the current system to something that is more Windows- and OS X-like: while many updates can still be made on the fly, certain package updates will require the system to be restarted so the patches can be applied in a special mode, according to the Fedora wiki page on the feature,' writes blogger Brian Proffitt."

Swiss Bank Has 43-Page Dress Code 212

Tasha26 writes "The HR of Swiss bank UBS AG came up with an innovative 43-page document (French) to establish fashion 'dos' and 'don'ts' in their retail branches. Among the rules are such things as: 'neither sex should allow their underwear to appear,' perhaps Dilbert was a bit ahead of them on that. The document also mentions smells and 'avoid garlic and onion-based dishes.'"

Racy Danish Tabloid May Sue Apple For App Rejection 319

the_arrow writes "In Denmark the tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet usually have scantily clad ladies on page 9. When making an iPad application, Apple of course rejected it because of that. However, Ekstra Bladet is not happy with that, and many sites report that Ekstra Bladet is thinking about taking Apple to European court for 'unfair censorship and anti-competitive behaviour.'"

'Hulu For Magazines' Relies On Users' Data 41

Toe, The writes "In an interesting twist on the free/closed mobile platform debate, Apple's closed platform appears to be at least nominally on the free side when it comes to magazine distribution. Magazines have always relied on the demographics of their subscribers to sell ad space to companies who would want to reach that demographic. This apparently has been a sticking point between publishers and Apple, because the latter is unwilling to allow its tools to expose the vast wealth of data that can be tapped from a modern mobile device connected to a purchasing account. For that reason, the so-called 'Hulu for Magazines,' Next Issue Media, will only be available on Android. Still unanswered: do people even want digital magazines?"
