An anonymous reader writes: An article on Reuters informs that police arrested a teenager suspected of posting his own translation of the latest Harry Potter novel on the Internet weeks before the official French release. [...] "Concerned that such acts of counterfeiting are threats to basic authors' and creators' rights, (author J.K. Rowling and Gallimard) immediately agreed to support the investigation as it was launched," spokeswoman Marie Leroy-Lena said in a statement. "It is not a young person or a fan we are talking about here — these are organized networks that use young people,".

Pedahzur writes: "The recently released Apple iWork '08 contains does not contain support for ODF (Open Document Format), an ISO standard. There is support, however, for Microsoft's OOXML, which is not yet an ISO standard (and may never be). Hopefully with enough community and customer feedback, Apple could be nudged into including ODF in their next update of iWork. If you'd like to see this happen, add your name to the Apple ODF Petition."

According to this story, SCO accuses PJ once again of working with Novell and IBM while receiving assistance from them. Be sure to read the accompanying PDFs, but I suspect that PJ will have no trouble finding someone in the open-source community who has the legal training and resolve to defend her with vigor.

WY writes: Bloomberg reports in this article about the Japanese hybrid car hackers: "Toyota Motor Corp. says its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid car gets about 55 miles to the gallon, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the road. That's not good enough for Takashi Toya." He managed to reach as high as 115 MPG. He "is one of about 100 nenpimania, Japanese for 'ileage maniacs,'."

LivingLightning writes: "An unknow Malesian coder has wrote programs that emulates iPhone's interface. He put video about this software on YouTube. Apple lawyers made YouTube take down the video and without any specific legal background hustled coder in e-mail. In response a lawyer posted video and software on his website and with a help of a designer they also prepared a set of alternative icons and wallpaper."
