HTC Dragging Feet On GPL Source Release For "Hero" Phone 181

Squiff writes to mention that despite being based on the Open Handset Alliance's Android platform and using several open source components, HTC are effectively refusing to release the source for the GPL parts of their "Hero" Phone code, saying that they are "waiting for their developers to provide it." It has been called an "object of lust," it's beating the iPhone for awards, and it seems to be the first Android phone that really is "the phone to have," to hear some people tell it. It has also just become available in the US after a June release in Europe.

They are ignoring their customers and their legal responsibilites, will they (can they?) ignore the Slashdot effect?

Submission + - Computer Model Predicts Missing Matter Location (ascribe.org)

eldavojohn writes: "There exists a little known problem of missing regular matter that has perhaps been overshadowed by the great mystery of missing dark matter. Computer models show that there should be a lot more regular matter than there is ... so where is it? Well, from the article, "It took the researchers nearly a decade to produce the extraordinarily complex computer code that drove the simulation, which incorporated virtually all of the known physical conditions of the universe reaching back in time almost to the Big Bang, said Burns. The simulation — which uses advanced numerical techniques to zoom-in on interesting structures in the universe — modeled the motion of matter as it collapsed due to gravity and became dense enough to form cosmic filaments and galaxy structures. According to the standard cosmological model, the universe consists of about 25 percent dark matter and 70 percent dark energy around 5 percent normal matter, said Burns. Normal matter consists primarily of baryons — hydrogen, helium and heavier elements — and observations show that about 40 percent of the baryons are currently unaccounted for. Many astrophysicists believe the missing baryons are in the WHIM (Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium), Burns said." This hypothesis will be investigated and hopefully proved/disproved when telescopes are completed in Chile and the Antarctic, they hope to be able to inspect galaxies at early stages and perhaps see the beginnings of these filaments. The paper will be up for review in this week's edition of the the astrophysical journal."
