A few conflicts where 20,000 people die is far better than a World War II sized event where 60 TO 85 MILLION die. And that total only includes ~130,000 from the use of primitive nuclear weapons.

Are small wars bad? Of course they are. But big honking all-in fuck-up-entire-continents wars are FAR worse.

And of course that is assuming that the nuclear weapons somehow majically keep the big wars from happening.

There are at least two groups who want the world to end. One is kooky, and the other is bat shit crazy. What do you think they are going to do if they get the chance of issuing a 10 negation weapon of God?

Never underestimate large numbers of people to lose their sanity. It happened twice last century.

As Albert Einstein said:

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Death is not a bad option, really.

Good to see that someone else is talking sense. The concept of human immortality is silly, and not well thought out.

Certainly the religious who believe in a second life after death would be deprived of meeting their maker, and would cosider immortality as cheating their maker from his justice on the newly immortal.

But even so, after the first thousand years or so, it would have to get pretty boring.

I listened to a TED talk the past weekend about this immortality. These people were crazier than shithouse rats, assuming how 100 percent of us feel, making pie in the sky predictions and completely ignoring anything that didn't suit them.

And its funny, listening to the people speak, the first thing I thought of was religion. More silly religion. Which of course, won't work because in a world where everyone is immortal, who are ya gonna kill? Can't have religion without popping a few nonbelievers now and then.

Sure you can mandate when people have to stop reproducing. If we get to the point that it's a real option to, "halt", father time, then we should put a hard limit on when you can actually reproduce, not have sex, just have babies. In a case where false immortality is an option, we'd have to look very seriously at something like this as.

The Duggars called. They said they are going to keep flailing that thing until it dries up and nothing more will pop out. They're doing god's work, and your puny mandates mean nothing.

So we've entered the endless small war phase.

Try to find a time in history when the world wasn't in the endless small war phase (other than when the world was in a big war phase of course)

I think you might take a look at Afghanistan and what it helped do to the soviets. Those endless small wars do a great and inexorable job of Bankrupting countries. I'll take a few nukes every hundred years to a bnakrupt country fighting for gawd knows what in gawd knows where for people who want us dead anyhow, and are just using whoever sides with them at the moment.

Are you willing to bankrupt America to support these folks?

THIS! A thousands time this! I buy thousands of dollars every year - and multiple tens of thousands before retirement.

And not once have I "found" a place through a web ad, Not once have I even ever clicked on a web ad.

Granted, by this time I block them all, so for the last 5 years, it's a given.

Last time I saw an ad, I had searched for something, a tire from TireRack, and the next dozen pages I went to had - the tire I had searched for on Tire Rack. Stalking me like no one's business. It would be like going into Sears to check on a tire price, and someone from Sears follows you to every store you go to for a week afterwards.

But I still buy thousands each year online. At least for me, present day ad stalkers paradigm is, what's the word?.....Oh yeah, fucking stupid.

The "ways" aren't exactly mysterious. You live in the great plains, you're going to get floods and tornadoes.

Sure - be serious! But since we're here, my thoughts on exactly why places like yours tend to the religious.

A drive through the countryside in my area will show a lot of farms with presumably fundamentalist religious owners, if the signs are to be believe. Plenty of "The wages of sin is death" friendly reminders to see.

Giving some thought to the matter, who more likely to be really religious. Religion is the desire to influence events that you have no influence over. A Farmer has to have some sort of trust that the rains will come, the temperatures will moderate, and the crops will grow. Economic and some times actual life critical.

So they pray a lot, and in earlier times, when weather patterns were not known, it was not outside the realm of reason that abundant years were signs of Godly approval, and bad years were signs of offense.

But then you have the odd happening of the "faithful" being hammered by nature like this. Then it becomes silly season. The leaders scurry to find blame and attach it to the usual sources (Katrina, The mess in New Jersey, and Haiti come to mind).

So we have the elite, gay loving people of the northeast getting pummeled by a hurricane as proof of gawd's wrath against homosexuals, and it's accepted by the devout.

And there will be some insane excuses regarding these floods in Texas and Oklahoma that might be completely opposite in nature, but likewise gobbled up as proof of gawd's something something.

But let's take Haiti. One of gawd's mouthpieces, Pat Robertson gave the massive earthquake in Haiti as divine retribution http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/01/...

Now the fact that haiti sits on a shallow plate of geology that has been there long before there were those Hatians that presumably made a pact with the devil, apparently has nothing to do with it.

I wonder what Pat's comments on the present day mess in Texas and Oklahoma are? It will probably be along the lines of having to purge the sinners among the faithful, or if not fully prepared, back to the old "Mysterious ways" catchall.

So back to Oklahoma and Texas. They don't want to believe they have no control over these disasters, they see the destruction, and since humans have this strong approval blame thing going on, they feel they need to do something. Religion to the rescue.

Whereas the smart money says move elsewhere.
