Future Ubisoft Games To Require Constant Internet Access 497

Following up on our discussion yesterday of annoying game distribution platforms, Ubisoft has announced the details of their Online Services Platform, which they will use to distribute and administer future PC game releases. The platform will require internet access in order to play installed games, saved games will be stored remotely, and the game you're playing will even pause and try to reconnect if your connection is lost during play. Quoting Rock, Paper, Shotgun: "This seems like such a bizarre, bewildering backward step. Of course we haven't experienced it yet, but based on Ubi’s own description of the system so many concerns arise. Yes, certainly, most people have the internet all the time on their PCs. But not all people. So already a percentage of the audience is lost. Then comes those who own gaming laptops, who now will not be able to play games on trains, buses, in the park, or anywhere they may not be able to find a WiFi connection (something that’s rarely free in the UK, of course – fancy paying the £10/hour in the airport to play your Ubisoft game?). Then there's the day your internet is down, and the engineers can’t come out to fix it until tomorrow. No game for you. Or any of the dozens of other situations when the internet is not available to a player. But further, there are people who do not wish to let a publisher know their private gaming habits. People who do not wish to report in to a company they’ve no affiliation with, nor accountability to, whenever they play a game they’ve legally bought. People who don’t want their save data stored remotely. This new system renders all customers beholden to Ubisoft in perpetuity whenever they buy their games."

Satellite Collision Debris May Hamper Space Launch 131

Matt_dk writes "The debris from a recent collision involving two communications satellites could pose a serious threat for future launches of spacecraft into a geostationary orbit, a Russian scientist said on Friday. Future launches will have to be adjusted with regard to the fact that the debris [from the collision] has spread over an 800-km area and will gather at a common orbit in 5-6 years."

I'm a PC and I'm 4-1/2 435

theodp writes "Microsoft's new Windows ad made its debut during the Grammy Awards on Sunday. It stars a 4-year-old cutie named Kylie (Silverlight required) showing how easy it is to use Windows Live Photo Gallery to edit and share photos. And while it's impressive that little Kylie is able to transfer a snapshot of her pet fish from her camera to a PC, color-correct it, and e-mail it to her family, what's truly amazing is that the toddler was also apparently able to read, understand, and accept Windows Live's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. (But minors can't legally execute contracts, can they?)"

Submission + - Simulation of 9/11 attacks back building failure. (smh.com.au)

BlacKSacrificE writes: "Sydney Morning Herald reports lads at the Purdue University have created a computer simulation of the aircraft hitting that shows what caused the towers to collapse allegedly. While they are yet to address most of the conspiracy theories claims around the event regarding melting temperatures of steel, pools of thermite-like molten material pouring out of the buildings, and reports of midgets in clown uniforms with explosive squibs, it apparently backs the idea that all the central support beams were taken out, causing the collapse. A video of the simulation is not available online as far as i can find, but I would love to see it nonetheless."

My god, I went cold when I heard about this today, as it did when Columbine and the Amish school shootings went down. Chains on doors, reports of sole survivors from classes that had to pretend to be dead while the bodies of their friends rained down and onto them, it just makes me cry. I called a guy I went to Uni of Tech in Sydney 20 years ago with this morning just to talk to him, to hear he was having a good day. We speak often enough, but this poor lad, sole survivor left behind in a classroom full of bodies, and dozens.. hundreds of others given the size of the campus, have just lost life long friends worth more than all the gold on the planet.

This kid who opened fire, talk of looking for his girlfriend, whatever reasons he had, he had a lot going on, and I for one will not write him off, as thankfully a lot of you haven't. some of you have expressed a degree of sympathy towards him, as do I. Such destruction must not be tolerated, but at the same time, neither should anyone feeling so messed up that the only solution is hot lead. These are all kids for god sake.

Please oh please, fellow humans creatures, we must do something to stop this. Have your moments of sadness and say your prayers to and ask [insert deity here] to hold and warm the families of both the victims and perpetrator. But for the love of [insert deity here] push your legislators and law makers to tighten gun control. We can't allow this to happen anymore. its just such a [insert deity here] damn waste.
