Submission + - Radiohead's "In Rainbows" pre-release e-ma (blogspot.com)

routerl writes: "Rolling Stone reported on this about a week ago, and the album's website has been up for a while. Then, at 4:26 pm, I received (as I'm sure did many others) the following e-mail:

THANK YOU FOR ORDERING IN RAINBOWS. THIS IS AN UPDATE.

YOUR UNIQUE ACTIVATION CODE(S) WILL BE SENT OUT TOMORROW MORNING (UK TIME). THIS WILL TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE DOWNLOAD AREA.

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOWNLOAD:

THE ALBUM WILL COME AS A 48.4MB ZIP FILE CONTAINING 10 X 160KBPS DRM FREE MP3s.

MOST COMPUTERS NOW HAVE ZIP SOFTWARE AS PART OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM; IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT, YOU NEED TO GET WINZIP OR ZIPIT INSTALLED PRIOR.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THEM HERE:

PC: http://www.winzip.com/ MAC: http://www.maczipit.com/

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS DOWNLOADING YOUR FILE, PLEASE CONTACT OUR DOWNLOAD CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM AT downloadinrainbows@waste.uk.com

Solely as an experiment (I intend to buy the album at least once more), I paid zero pounds. But, sure enough, the DRM free MP3s would still be available, accompanied by friendly assistance with compression formats (not every Radiohead fan reads /.)."

Submission + - Nine Inch Nails goes indie (nin.com)

hpa writes: Nine Inch Nails announced yesterday on their website that they are now "a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label". CNet also have a story on this, and points out that Radiohead took this step not long ago. CNet asks "Who needs middlemen?", and it will be very interesting to see if independent promotion can be more effective than the RIAA production-distribution monopoly.

Submission + - Artists finally start ditching the record labels!

Ariastis writes: In the last few days, Trent Reznor (NIN), Radio head, possibly Oasis and Jamiroquai and some others are finally sticking up to the greedy Record Labels. They have all started to distribute (or are thinking about it) their music independently, refusing to deal with the greedy old bastards who try to smother their fans. All downloads are DRM-Free, and RadioHead even allows their fans to set the price of the stuff they download!

Submission + - PC makers walk fine line with 'crapware'

WeeBit writes: ""For years, computer makers have managed to wring a few extra bucks of profit out of each PC sale by bundling all sorts of third-party software. While adding software, setting default search engines and including toolbars can all put money in PC makers' pockets, the practice has also alienated some consumers who say all such "crapware" is clogging their hard drives and bogging down their systems. "

PC makers walk fine line with 'crapware'

I would lots rather be offered the full version software, than get the trial versions. I don't like toolbars on the browsers at all. Plus I don't feel the public should have to pay for something they don't get in the first place. Maybe if they offered us like five software fully functional for a year at a reduced price? The trial versions are definitely hated by me, and many others. Most I never intend to use, or I prefer another software to do the job. Plus they do clog the pc with this stuff. I am a firm believer of choice. Most of the vendors though you get what you get, and your stuck with it. So normally a new computer to me means cleaning the hard drive as soon as you take it out of the box.* As I said though... Why should we pay for something we are not getting?"

This Week in Downloadable Content 56

Both the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade have some interesting offerings this week, and Microsoft has released word of a lot of new things to come via their community service. The day before yesterday saw the release of Punch-Out!!, Virtua Fighter 2, and Bonk's Revenge for the Wii's download service. No Mike Tyson in this version of Punch-Out!!, but it's still (as Kohler puts it) one of the 'best videogames of all time.' On the Xbox side, today sees the release of a 'double header' of games: Gyruss and 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures . Gyruss is a Konami arcade port, while Minigolf includes a course editor to distract you from the simple gameplay. As far as new XBLA content goes: The Daily show is already available on the service, along with The Colbert Report, Carcossonne will join Settlers of Catan and (apparently) Talisman in boardgame-to-Xbox ports, and Microsoft is looking for pitches for a television show to be shown exclusively on Xbox live. If you win the TV contest, you get to make it for them.
