Comment The world is transitioning (Score 4, Insightful) 36

While this one facility will not suddenly shut down all the thermal generation in California, it is one step in enabling more renewable penetration into the market. As more and more such facilities are constructed and proven, renewables will continue making greater and greater inroads in the energy mix. It wasn't all that long ago that many, many individuals were all over this and other comment boards screaming that the very thing that's going on now was/is impossible.

Yup. Everything has an expected life, engines, turbines, fuel cells and yes, batteries... Investors look at how much can be made during operational life. When the economics dictate upgrades or rebuilds then that's what happens. We now have a lot of real world data about how battery cells are preforming and a lifespan of 20-30 years is easily expected. After which, the cells can be recycled back into more cells.

Comment Time to ship Nikola (Score 5, Informative) 85

Between Nikola and Fisker they've got the market cornered on design concepts and renderings. Maybe time to think about shipping a product. Also, this hydrogen network was announced years ago and their own deadline has already come and gone and they still have yet to install a single, solitary hydrogen pump. Not surprising when you actually look at the economics of hydrogen. I guess that's why they need such a large battery pack: cover up the flaws of hydrogen.

Comment Then Tesla should refund the original owner... (Score 1) 344

Tesla then needs to refund the original owner -OR- if the original owner buys a new Tesla, FSD should be included for free -OR- FSD should transfer with the car. Otherwise the original owner purchased FSD which was never delivered before the car was sold. Then even the potential for FSD on that vehicle was subsequently removed by Tesla. If Tesla wants to claim that the rights to FSD are with individual and not the vehicle, then they need to include FSD on every Tesla the owner may purchase in perpetuity, because that individual has paid Tesla for it. If this is the case then I have no problem with Tesla disabling FSD for an owner that never paid for it. However, I doubt this is the case. I suspect that Tesla wants to have its cake and eat it too.

Honestly, I'm generally a huge Tesla fan but the company does do some really scummy things and this is one of them. I personally would not purchase FSD unless it reaches at least lvl 4 capability and can basically drive you door to door on it's own outside of the worst conditions. However, considering that could take years and apparently will be disabled if you transfer ownership of said vehicle anyway, why would anyone choose to give Tesla $8,000+ for an option that's years overdue, won't add resale value and probably still years away?

Submission + - Avast anti virus selling browsing history. (vice.com)

Socguy writes: Avast has been tracking and selling every click you make and every video you watch while browsing the web. They use to do this with a browser add on but when those were recently disabled, Avast started requesting users opt in to a new program which gave them cover to conduct this activity straight in the anti virus program proper. Security researchers believe that enough data is being sent that it may be possible to de anonymise users.

Comment Hmm (Score 1) 179

So a petition if filed by an individual who is shorting the stock and doesn't even seem to own a Tesla? By all means, investigate. If there's something afoot then it needs to be fixed. I, however, fully expect that any investigation will quickly uncover driver error as the cause.... As it is in 99% of all unintended acceleration cases.
