That's not the way it works.

That's exactly how it works.

two options: keep employing them under terms that the employees agree to, or fire them and watch their unemployment insurance rates skyrocket

Firing and layoff are two entirely different things. Firing someone because they refuse to do their job has no effect on a company's unemployment insurance rates.

You can buy Apple MacOS computers and Chromebooks in "main street shops". Apple more expensive than Windows computers and Chromebooks are less expensive so you do have a choice.

Apple is significantly more expensive, without being any better or more secure. Chromebooks may be more secure, but only because they are useless.

Windows Pro is fine. Its the only one worth using. Windows Pro for Workstations is even better. Its a bit more expensive but worth it.

((OH NO!! HE ACTUALLY PAID FOR SOFTWARE!! OUTRAGEOUS!!))

With Pro and Pro for Workstations you still have to do some tweaking, but you CAN turn off all the useless garbage. Never use the Home version of Windows .... that's Windows for Stupid People.

I'm a little horrified to see that Microsoft is shielding the AI from blame by throwing the humans under the bus.

This is not surprising at all. Microsoft (and many others) is hoping that eventually A.I. will become good enough that they can completely replace all those annoying humans who keep insisting on being paid for the work that they do.

And so they will keep pretending that the problems are all the result of "human error", not a flawed computer program, because that buys them more time to keep trying to refine A.I. so that it actually works reliably.

They don't. Businesses pay through the teeth to get "enterprise licenses" for Windows 11, which is a pure install without all the garbage. Normal people cannot even buy the enterprise version. But I suspect there are a growing number of powershell scripts to strip the bload and turn a normal install into something more like enterprise.

Yes, there are several third-party programs and scripts that can unfuck many (but not all) of the things that Microsoft has fucked. It would be nice if we didn't have to do that, but at least we have that option available.

Enterprise Windows is essentially a different critter than home Windows;

Yes. The enterprise version of Windows doesn't have all of these problems, but the average person cannot (legally) get it. You can buy it but you have to buy a minimum of 25 licenses.

Not that I like installing yet another tool, but here we have real need. "Cleanup tool to clean up after you cleaned up" or something.

The funny thing is, Windows has a program called "Cleanmgr.msc". Run it and it shows you all the unnecessary files you can delete., especially all the crap left behind after doing an update.

I used to be a senior engineer at an MLS data processing clearinghouse, handling data from over 200 MLSs. It always boggled me how difficult it was to get various MLS orgs to agree on schemas and metadata for their database entries,

That's probably all true, but irrelevant. This problem has nothing to do with database schemas. This is a bunch of corrupt, incompetent buffoons who can't be bothered to pay attention to security because it would cut into their profits.

This is happening more and more across all businesses and will continue to get worse until businesses are held accountable and face serious consequences for failing to secure their systems.

Anyone with half a brain saw this coming.
