Nevertheless an Apple environment is currently the most pure and easiest to use - and yes, I can and do administer and program computers (but only my own since I retired).

Personally I prefer and use FreeBSD. Even on MacOS I use the FreeBSD ports system. But for interacting with world in general and people who are not IT staff or IT staff capable the Apple environment is the way to go. It is far easier for the average yobbo to use basic functions.

MacOS provide a free development kit for you to do this. And yes, you can put I about for free by either passing on the source code (it is a curbed garden not a walled one) or by getting it approved for the Apple store.
