Submission + - Impressive Blowing Dust on Satellite Loop

Anonymous Weather Geek writes: "The large low pressure storm system now over the Plains states is producing a variety of weather conditions from the High Plains to the Mississippi Valley this afternoon. The strong low pressure system is producing a impressive blowing dust event over Texas, that can been seen very well by visible satellite imagery from space. Northwest winds of 40-60 mph, are blowing dust over western and north-central Texas. In the satellite loop provided in this post, you can clearly see the dust wind surge blasting eastward across Texas. It's very impressive to see such a clear view of the dry slot wind surge on the back side of the strong low pressure system. http://www.stormvideographer.com/blog/2007/02/24/i mpressive-blowing-dust-on-satellite-plains-storm/"

Interstellar Ark 703

xantox writes "There are three strategies to travel 10.5 light-years from Earth to Epsilon Eridani and bring humanity into a new stellar system : 1) Wait for future discovery of Star Trek physics and go there almost instantaneously, 2) Build a relativistic rocket powered by antimatter and go there in 22 years by accelerating constantly at 1g, provided that you master stellar amounts of energy (so, nothing realistic until now), but what about 3): go there by classical means, by building a gigantic Ark of several miles in radius, propulsed by nuclear fusion and featuring artificial gravity, oceans and cities, for a travel of seven centuries — where many generations of men and women would live ? This new speculation uses some actual physics and math to figure out how far are our fantasies of space travel from their actual implementation."

Walking Molecule Now Carries Packages 108

Roland Piquepaille writes "Chemists from the University of California at Riverside designed two years ago a molecule which could move straight on a flat surface — a nano-walker if you wish. Now, they've found a way to force this walking molecule to carry packages. The nano-worker can now carry two CO2 molecules. And like yourself when you carry two heavy bags, this nano-worker is slower when it carries other molecules. The researchers think their discovery will lead to reliable ways of carrying molecules, an equivalent of the conveyor belts in today's factories."

Nobel Prize Winners Live Longer 144

anthemaniac writes "A new study finds those who won Nobel Prizes between 1901 and 1950 lived about 2 years longer than nominees who didn't win. The researchers conclude that the instantly conferred social status leads to health benefits. From the story: 'The research rules out the possibility that intervening prize-related money itself adds the years through improved prosperity.' If you're thinking of aiming for the prize, pick the right field. Nobel laureates in physics lived nearly a year longer than winners in chemistry."

Gold Mining Bacteria 50

Anonymous 49'er writes "Nature is reporting that bacteria found in Australian gold mines are capable of extruding tiny invisible 'secondary grains' from soil and alluvial systems. From the article: "Potential applications -- from sensing the bacteria as a way to look for gold mines, to using them to help make industrially useful particles of gold -- may be some way off. But Southam is keen to exploit the bacteria's natural trick. 'I want to make a gold nugget one day,' he says. 'Gold nuggets grow in nature, so why shouldn't I be able to make one?'"

Note: keen observations of morphology can be very telling about the behaviour of the animal. Always ask why.

A neat trick would be to photo graph with camera set at a high shutter spead the ejection of formic acid from an ant mound.

An idea for collecting insects... Use catheridin bait http://example.com/ Check to see if this stuff can be purchased at chemstores or collect blister beetles from somewhere (maybe even while in the field in Tanzania) and collect fluid with capillary tube. Best option is to obtain crystals from somewhere.
