Submission + - AI Lawyer "Ross" Hired by Official Law Firm (futurism.com) 1

iONiUM writes: From the article:

Law firm Baker & Hostetler has announced that they are employing IBM’s AI Ross to handle their bankruptcy practice, which at the moment consists of nearly 50 lawyers. According to CEO and co-founder Andrew Arruda, other firms have also signed licenses with Ross, and they will also be making announcements shortly.

Ross, “the world’s first artificially intelligent attorney” built on IBM’s cognitive computer Watson, was designed to read and understand language, postulate hypotheses when asked questions, research, and then generate responses (along with references and citations) to back up its conclusions. Ross also learns from experience, gaining speed and knowledge the more you interact with it.

You talk about geo-engineering like we *haven't* already been doing it for a hundred years. Climate change itself is geo-engineering, by humans. It wasn't intentional, but it happened.

It is certainly do-able, and there are many ways to approach it. It doesn't have to be a sci-fi CO2 sucking machine that flies in the clouds.

Submission + - Canadian Federal Government to Legalize Marijuana Spring 2017 (theglobeandmail.com)

iONiUM writes: From the article:

Canada’s legislation to begin the process of legalizing and regulating marijuana will be introduced next spring, Health Minister Jane Philpott announced Wednesday at the United Nations. During her impassioned speech at a special UN session on drugs, Philpott acknowledged the pot plan “challenges the status quo in many countries,” but she said the Liberal government is convinced it’s the best way to protect youth, while enhancing public safety. Canada must do better when it comes to drug policy, she added, saying the government’s approach will be rooted in science and will address the devastating consequences of drugs and drug-related crimes.

The Canadian Liberal party won last year and a large part of their platform was drug reform, specifically to legalize Marijuana sales. Doing this on April 20th (4/20) was a smart move.

Comment Linux is not ready (Score 0) 565

I'll tell you why it's not ready, from my own personal experience these 4 points sum up the issues:

  1. 1. Don't ask me to format and re-install when I want to "upgrade." I ran into exactly that with Linux Mint. Every other OS I use (OSX, Windows) can just upgrade on the spot between major versions.
  2. 2. Make suspend / resume work for laptops. Every laptop I've tried, it has not worked (I've tried 3).
  3. 3. Support that same hardware as Windows. This is tough from a technical point of view (there's so much), but when your specific network card isn't supported and you need to find a different one and then modify it slightly and rebuild the kernel, you've lost. This is the most common thing I hear from my friends who have tried Linux (in the past 2 years), and happened to myself as well. I documented my experience and linked it twice on Slashdot, I'm not going to bother linking it again.
  4. 4. Support UEFI properly. In all cases I installed Linux in a dual boot scenario on a machine with UEFI, it took a lot of messing around in the command line to make things work properly. Why?

Submission + - Monaco-based Oil Company Unaoil Raided by Police (theage.com.au)

iONiUM writes: On the heels of this week's article on widespread corruption in the oil industry, today the Monaco-based oil company Unaoil and also the homes of its executives were raided by police.

From the article: "Fairfax Media revealed on Thursday that the British police had teamed up with the Australian Federal Police, the US Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate the vast cache of emails on which our stories have been based."

It has now also been revealed that Hyundai, Samsung, Sinopec and Petronas were also involved. However, outside of Australian media (and Slashdot), there has been no reporting at all of these events.

Comment Reddit is also censoring posts (Score 0, Troll) 178

Reddit has also been censoring posts lately by removing them from various subreddits without explanation. Typically these are posts which go against it's leftist liberal views. One of the biggest examples was the Cologne sexual assaults, which were continuously removed over a 3-day period until finally being permitted. A more recent example can be seen here: https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/4ctuew/found_this_on_rwtf/

This post refers to another post which contained a video showing a black woman assaulting a white man because he has dread locks. This post was immediately removed from /r/videos, /r/politics, and /r/wtf with no reason given several times (posted by several users). The removed post can be still be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/4cswsg/white_guys_cant_have_dreadlocks/

The worst part is you can't even link to the removed post on reddit, as it will automatically be removed as well. It appears this was easily circumvented by using a shortlink, however.

I'm sorry but I call BS. I have a Wii U, and I have a PS4. I can't comment about the xbox one (I only have a 360), but between the Wii U and the PS4, there's no question: the PS4 is *way* smoother both for getting into the app (it auto re-starts from standby mode and even keeps your spot), and the actual playing itself.

So I don't know how you came to this conclusion, but I definitely disagree from my own experience.

Submission + - Google gets 113,668 copyright takedown requests an hour (thenextweb.com)

iONiUM writes: From the article: "Google’s playing a cat and mouse game with link-sharers on the Web and the search giant is increasingly swamped with takedown requests from rights holders, or those acting on behalf of them, mainly in the music and film industries.
In the company’s latest copyright transparency report, it revealed that it received some 19 million takedown requests just last week.
That’s more than double the figure seen at the same time last year and dwarfs the 4 million requests made during the same week in 2013."
