This whole thing has been fought already in the 90's and these idiots need to go away. There are companies in place who provide the takedown service. If their label is not already doing it, or they aren't themselves, I'd be surprised. If they are claiming anything else at all, it is already covered under fair use and they should go away. I find it entirely more likely that these people are feeling the record industry squeezing their profit margin rather than the general public.

Comment Working in Enterprise IT.... (Score 1) 543

This would actually flip our organizations entire wage scale upside down, and pretty much cause a good 50-75% increase in the IT budget as a whole until the organization is able to adjust. And you know what... I really like the idea... it needs to adjust for inflation though.

It is ridiculous in this day and age that I had to essentially go work for an H1B company, get paid an H1B salary (as an American), and then struggle for a couple years to become "internal" IT to the company I was contracted for, and now I'm technically not supposed to be allowed to code any more because of it, which is even more ridiculous, just because it looks cheaper on paper to outsource the work.

Ask Slashdot: Xbox One Or PlayStation 4? 375

An anonymous reader writes: I'm looking at getting the kids a new gaming console for Christmas this year. I'm stuck trying to decide between getting an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4. I'm really wary on the PlayStation because of the 5 PS2s with broken optical drives sitting in my garage; none lasted more than two years. On the other hand, I'm also wary of buying a Microsoft product; I'm a Linux user for life after getting tired of their crappy operating system. I've also considered getting a gaming PC, whether Linux or Windows, but it's more expensive and game reviews show most are not as good as a dedicated game console. The kids want Fallout 4, and I want Star Wars Battlefront and any version of Gran Turismo. We currently have a Nintendo Wii and a crappy gaming PC with some Steam games. So, which gaming console should I get that will last a long time?

ISIS's Hunt For a Bogus Superweapon 330

schnell writes: The New York Times Magazine has a fascinating story about ISIS efforts to get their hands on a mysterious and powerful superweapon called Red Mercury. The problem is that by consensus among scientific authorities, Red Mercury doesn't exist. And yet that hasn't stopped the legend of Red Mercury, touted by sources from Nazi conspiracy theorists to former Manhattan Project scientists, as having magical properties. Middle East weapons traders have even spun elaborate stories for its properties (ranging from thermonuclear explosive properties to sexual enhancement) and origins and sources (from Soviet weapons labs to Roman graveyards). What can account for the enduring myth of Red Mercury — is it rampant scientific illiteracy, the power of urban legend and shared myth, or something else?
