Comment Re:I have always hated texinfo (Score 1) 173

This net bsd documentation of sed is incredibly better that the one I have on Linux. It is almost perfect. In 5 minutes, I have found only one point of ambiguity: it says it is a superset of posix.2, but I do not find the possibility to use a dash instead of a file to mean stdin. Maybe there are others issues, but this is clearly a better documentation (should I switch to netbsd ?).

Comment I have always hated texinfo (Score 2) 173

It has been used as a pretext for not providing correct man pages. For example man sed:
COMMAND SYNOPSIS
This is just a brief synopsis of sed commands to serve as a reminder to those who
already know sed; other documentation (such as the texinfo document) must be con-
sulted for fuller descriptions.

When I have learned unix, man pages were complete, concise, accurate and uptodate documentation of all the system. I feel that because of this textinfo mess, man pages on Linux are incomplete and vague and that the documentation dislayed by info is not very clear.

I fully second this. When I was 18, I was reading complex technical documentation in english but was completely unable to have an oral discussion, even writing english was very difficult. Now, I work regularly with foreign people (in english). I still find discussing ideas in english a lot more painful than in my native language.

Concerning translation of development tools, I prefer to have the tools in english, but I know people who really prefer to have them in their native language.

When I read the site http://www.winapp2.com/, it seems that you have nothing to be afraid of (Winapp2.ini is described as an addon for CCleaner, System Ninja, and BleachBit that is not endorsed or supported in any way by Piriform). IANAL, but my 2p advice is to keep preciously a copy of the actual content of this site.

I think that software seller should stop their EULA craziness and comply with good trade laws. When a society negotiates a license to use a software, it is a very different business than a usual consumer who buys a software or a game in a supermarket. Laws should be there to protect consumers. When I buy Microsoft Office, I own it, I have the right to decompile it to learn how to use Windows API. If Microsoft Office makes my computer burn, Microsoft shall be responsible. Of course I do not have the right to copy it and to sell copies, but it is the same as with any other object I buy.

I live in France, and I work into the IT field. I have the complete opposite feeling than the post above. The CNIL has always demonstrated a very deep understanding of technology. Even if it is a state agency, it has provided very sound analysis and opinions on the recent laws (HADOPI, ...) that were demonstrating the stupidity of the proposed laws. The laws were adopted almost unchanged and all the analysis of the CNIL have been proven to be true.

The CNIL is not very powerful and can not go beyond its scope, but I have never been deceived by anything it has produced.

The main root of the CNIL is the history of France during the 2nd world war where some files were used against jews.

I think that Linux is not desktop ready, but it seems I do not have the same understanding of "desktop" as you.
2 weeks ago, I booted a ubuntu live CD and my nvidia video card was not correctly handled, it was unusable.
When I do a copy/paste, I have to cope with a mixture of windows and X conventions (Ctrl+CXV or mouse middle clicks).
There is no uniformity in application look and feel.
Gnome has put a layer that hides very well how things works. I have never found why hibernation was not working on my PC.
For me, individual applications are better on Linux than Windows, but the whole desktop experience is still not there.

Different types of mind lead to different types of programmers, none of them being really superior.
I know some experiences developers who have problems with recursivity. I have already met some very fast developers who were producing very good and clean code but who had difficulties to understand the requirements and the explanations.
I really do not think that this is a question of intelligence. There are so many programming languages not only because of the different kind of problems to solve, but also because of the different kind of minds.
Programming requires logic and abstraction. This may be slightly more difficult for some people, but as said Chef Gusto, "anyone can cook".
