Submission + - Hellish 'Super-Earths' Prevalent Throughout Galaxy (sciencemag.org)

sciencehabit writes: New theoretical studies predict that "Hellish Earths"--planets that orbit so close to their parent stars that their surfaces would likely be oceans of lava--are surprisingly prevalent in our galaxy. Eventually, these planets will begin a death spiral toward their suns, which will tear them apart before they vaporize.

Submission + - SPAM: Collision warning system for connected cars

Roland Piquepaille writes: "In the European Union alone, more than 40,000 people die every year in car accidents. Even if alcohol abuse or excessive speeds are certainly the major causes of these accidents, many crashes could be avoided if collision avoidance systems (CAS) were used. Such systems have been developed by researchers working for the REPOSIT project (RElative POSitioning for collIsion avoidance sysTems). Now, "European researchers have demonstrated in the lab a collision warning system for cars that could alert the driver several seconds in advance of an imminent impact." This system should not be expensive as it only involves popular GPS devices and an emerging car communication protocol called Vehicle2Vehicle (V2V), which is just a piece of software. So this kind of technology could soon easily be installed in cars and save thousands of lives. But read more for additional details and a picture showing how the V2V communications protocol works."

Submission + - Apple's Market Share Up (cnn.com)

Divebus writes: Snips from the article: "Reflecting strong holiday sales of both MacBooks and iPhones, Apple's (AAPL) market share grew sharply in December, as measured by a Net Applications survey released today. The Mac OS share, by contrast, grew 7.4% in the past month, nearly double November's rate. The iPhone grew even more sharply, jumping 33% over November's numbers. The Linux operating system also showed strong growth (up better than 10% to hit a .63% share), as did "other," a category that includes the iPod touch, Web TV and the Nintendo Wii."

Folklore says the Linux install base is much larger than Apple's OS X but a measurement like this says otherwise. This method only appears to measure market share for computers certain hitting web sites. Market share is always the focus of these articles when growth/decline may be the more interesting data point.

Submission + - Structuring a development team from scratch

TourDirector1108 writes: After some time as being the only developer with my company, company growth and related demands that come with it have led my Director of IT to ask me to build a development team basically from scratch. As a solo dev, I was in the fortunate position of basically being left to myself as long as certain (very flexible) deadlines were met. While the team is going to be very small at first (probably just one or two additional people), I've been told to plan for significant growth down the line. I want to get in place a series of practices, procedures and metrics for our group from both a management and a coding perspective. The only real considerations are that we're going to be doing most of our work in .NET/SQL2005, and that while I have the flexibility to structure this as I want, I don't have an unlimited budget. Any suggestions out there for building a team from scratch?
