ESRB Supplements Rating System With Summaries 53

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) announced today that in addition to their standard ratings for video games, they'll begin including summaries of the games, highlighting the parts which earned the rating. As Giant Bomb points out, some are quite entertaining to read. The new policy drew praise from Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT), both of whom have spoken out against "inappropriate" game content in the past. The summaries are viewable at the ESRB's website; thus far, they've only done them for games rated since July 1st.

The availability of dedicated hardware for 3D rendering is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, and the latest mobile phones come with 3D hardware acceleration that rivals the power of desktop graphics hardware. SoopahMan writes: "The first official Spore patch, v1.01.000, breaks Spore. The issue may be specific to Windows XP. Users are reporting:

If you have Spore, don't install the patch! The workarounds once it's installed seem to be waiting for EA to fix this with a patch for the patch, or — yes — reinstalling the game, which may ironically impact your 3 install limit."

Submission + - Spore DRM backfires

st33med writes: "According to 1up, Spore DRM has made pirating of the game hit the six-digit figures of 171,402 (and counting) since September 1st, which is very high even for a hot selling PC game. 1up pinpointed DRM as the cause for such high pirating issues because the person that has a copy of Spore would have to call EA for another activation code after the third install and there can only be one online account per DVD. Sughayer, the communications manager of EA, said that according to EA's data, less than 25 percent of users install their games more than once, and less than 1 percent attempt to install them more than three times.

This shows a pretty good connection between strict DRM schemes and angering the consumers to the point of pirating, I would say."

The notes left on [online petitions against the page] come from all over the world. "It's totally unacceptable to print the Prophet's picture," Saadia Bukhari from Pakistan wrote in a message.
