Submission + - Student arrested for quoting Columbine Killers

HoodCrowd writes: "Yuri Wainwright, 25, of Purvis, Mississippi was arrested last week for allegedly posting threatening messages on his MySpace Web page. He quoted the Columbine killers and posted other bulletins that the University of Southern Mississippi police force deemed dangerous. Those quotes can be found here. There is also an opinion piece from the enlightened student editor here. Has the good ole USA gone to the wimps? Is what he posted really worth holding him in prison for $1,000,000 bond. I am surly going to jail for the things I have posted on Slashdot."

Submission + - RIAA Secretly Tries to Get ISP Subscriber Info

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "The RIAA secretly went into federal district court in Denver, Colorado, the home town of its lawyers, and — in an attempt to change the rules of the game — made an ex parte application to a federal judge there, asking him to rule (pdf) that the federal Cable Communications Policy Act does not apply to the RIAA's attempts to get subscriber information from cable companies. ("Ex parte" means application was secret, no one else — neither the ISP nor the subscribers — were given notice that this was going on.). They were, in effect, asking the Court to rule that the RIAA does not need to get a court order to be able to force an ISP to disclose confidential subscriber information. The Magistrate Judge declined to rule on the issue (pdf), but did give them the ex parte discovery order they were looking for."

Submission + - Spiderman 3 available for $1

kindred359 writes: Newsflame.com reports that copies of Spiderman 3 are already hitting the streets in China for as little as $1. There is some speculation as to whether these are "legitimate" pirated copies or simply burns of Spiderman 2 repacked with a black-costumed cover. The funniest thing to me is that Sony investigated the reports and claimed that pirated copies of Spiderman 3 are not available for purchase or download. I'm sure if they had really found pirated copies of the movie they would have told us, right? Also, the article claims that some of the people that have purchased these pirated copies are having problems playing them in their DVD players. With the compatibility problems Sony has had with their own DVD releases, these pirated copies of Spidey are really authentic!

Submission + - Google Tops Microsoft as Most Visited Site

ack154 writes: The SF Chronicle has a story on Google surpassing Microsoft as the world's most visited website for the month of March. Google's 258 million unique visitors narrowly edged out Microsofts 257 million. Also mentioned in the same article is a report claiming Google has become 2007's Most Powerful Brand; beating out Microsoft again, as well as GE and Coca-Cola.

Submission + - Internet Gambling in US May return

joedoc writes: "Not much about this on the wires yet, but Reuters is running a story that Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass) will introduce a bill on Thursday that will lift the current ban on Internet wagering on casino gaming sites. Internet gambling was banned last year when President Bush singed a bill outlawing the use of bank and credit card transactions to fund those activities. I generally support the conservative side of things, but the libertarian in me always believed this was an example of egregious nanny-state politics that never should have passed muster."

Submission + - Sourceforge Changes Hands

eldavojohn writes: "Our beloved Sourceforge has been traded to CollabNet from VA Software (whose Open Source Technology Group (OSTG) operates Slashdot) for an equity stake in Collabnet. Since college, I've used Sourceforge hundreds if not thousands of times to access open source projects or even retrieve precompiled binaries. Either way, it's made my life easier and I hope it remains a free valuable resource."

Submission + - US - Russsia Tunnel Project Revived

s31523 writes: "Many have dreamed about a tunnel that connects the United States to Russia. Now, supporters are renewing their push for a tunnel to connect the western coast of Alaska to Yakutsk. According to the article, the feasibility study alone would cost 120 million dollars, and the whole project could cost as much as 65 billion dollars. The proposed tunnel route would create the longest tunnel, outdoing the "chunnel" by more than 30 miles."

Submission + - Is James Bond for sale? Sony replaces Q

techtakeaway writes: "The new James bond's equipment seems to have a recurring theme, from his Sony Vaio to his Sony camera, answering his SonyEricsson phone and using Sony GPS, it's not a surprise to anyone that the new film is made by Sony, and shot with Sony Cinecameras. To me this seems like an extreme example of product placement. Few people are loyal to electronic companies, we want the best for the cheapest and it doesn't surprise people to learn the same company isn't necessarily the best value in every department.

Company directors need to stop thinking in the world domination frame of mind and move to a revolutionary "practice what you are good at and make it irreplaceable technology to as many people as you can" which must be a better plan if you don't want to risk over stretching your business.

Product placement doesn't bother me too much, I find it's one of the most subtle way of advertising, and if it's not intrusive and I haven't been bothered by it during a film no harm done, but you still don't want to feel like you are being brainwashed.

Submission + - Failing students? Change the grade

EvilTwinSkippy writes: "The Philadelphia Inquirer has the story of one principal's crusade to turn a school around. It involved inventing extra paperwork teachers had to file to fail a student. When that failed, she simply went into he computer and changed the grades herself. With No Child Left Behind's emphasis on school performance, you have to wonder how often this is happening and teacher's don't blow the whistle. Especially in lights of the fact that the article mentioned this has happend before, in the same district."

Submission + - University IS Uses Patriot Act against students

An anonymous reader writes: I was reading this story at www.digg.com about University of Portland and how their IT security appears to be inhibiting the learning of their engineering students. Specifically, how one CS student was learning about the security holes for educational reasons and made a program that bypassed Cisco Clean Access to demonstrate its flaws and now this student is being suspended for a year. There is interesting discussion at http://www.digg.com/security/University_VP_of_Info rmation_Services_Uses_Patriot_Act_Against_Students and the articles and letters are fairly interesting to read, too, at http://www.mgridley.com/rogueUP/Rogue_Blog/Archive .html. Just thought it might make some more interesting discussion here, too. Thanks.
