There are plenty of science labs, just not among short-sighted, quarterly profit-focused companies. Find a tech company that's in it for the long haul, and there you'll find CS jobs. There are also many government labs that that actively seek CSs.

Did it involve cruise control at any point? There was an article a while back about Woz saying he had found a specific software bug with the accelerator. According to him the NHTSA dragged their feet on investigating it. If I had one, I'd probably stick some DAQ hardware on the ECU buses to see if I could record the problem.

I've got Ubuntu 10.10 on my Thinkpad X200 Tablet. It works pretty well, but not everything works perfectly. I've had every version of Ubuntu on it since 9.04, and some of the earlier ones actually seemed to work a little better. There are still a few kinks, though. Thankfully, sites like ThinkWiki exist to help with some of the problems.

I'm still having a few issues, though, such as the fingerprint scanner not working or when rotating the screen, the touch sensor doesn't translate its coordinates properly (so left-right becomes up-down when the screen is rotated 90 degrees). The mute button doesn't work properly either, but other than that it runs pretty well.

Submission + - Twitter Appears to Censor Wikileaks-Related Trends (studentactivism.net)

Sheep writes: This past week I found it weird that none of the words #wikileaks, #cablegate, #cables, #Assange, etc. were actually "trending" on Twitter. Today, my fears of some secret censorship going on, are slowly coming true. It appears that Twitter is censoring all these keywords, essentially trying to minimize the effect Wikileaks can have on the world through Twitter's democratized popularization of information. It's ironic that last year Twitter suspended their own scheduled server maintenance in order to not interrupt its users from tweeting on Iran's revolution, and now it appears to censor, and manipulate public opinion as it sees fit!

New Microscope Reveals Ultrastructure of Cells 58

An anonymous reader writes "For the first time, there is no need to chemically fix, stain or cut cells in order to study them. Instead, whole living cells are fast-frozen and studied in their natural environment. The new method delivers an immediate 3-D image, thereby closing a gap between conventional microscopic techniques. The new microscope delivers a high-resolution 3-D image of the entire cell in one step. This is an advantage over electron microscopy, in which a 3-D image is assembled out of many thin sections. This can take up to weeks for just one cell. Also, the cell need not be labeled with dyes, unlike in fluorescence microscopy, where only the labeled structures become visible. The new X-ray microscope instead exploits the natural contrast between organic material and water to form an image of all cell structures. Dr. Gerd Schneider and his microscopy team at the Institute for Soft Matter and Functional Materials have published their development in Nature Methods (abstract)."

If a computer can be infected with a virus simply by plugging in a USB storage device, you're doing it wrong. The military needs to turn off Auto-Run (or any kind of execution privileges) for every one of their computers for external storage devices. This problem has been prevalent for 10 years and they still haven't fixed it.
