Submission + - NEW XGS AVR 8-Bit and 16-Bit Development Kits (xgamestation.com)
RJPENN writes: I am one of the demo coders for the new XGS AVR 8-Bit and XGS PIC 16-Bit development kits from Nurve Networks. I have been sworn to secrecy until now, but finally the units have shipped and I wanted to tell everyone a little about my experience with them. First, I have a lot of experience with various development kits and have programmed both the PIC and AVR back in school. However, these days in my job, I program ARMs mostly. That said, I can say that for the past couple months I have had the best time playing with these kits that I have had in years. I totally forgot why I like electronics and programming (work does that to you), but playing with these new XGS units, I actually had "fun", and even my son got into it with me. The systems are VERY well designed, do a lot, and the kits come with TOO much in my opinion, these guys are only charging $139 and $159 which is a steal. The two things that stand out about these kits in my mind is the huge amount of work they put into the manuals (which are books more or less) and the API libraries. Graphics, NTSC, VGA, UART, SPI, I2C, SD card drivers, you name it they wrote it. The XGS's are like Arduinos on steriods.
So if you are interested in AVR or PIC development and can't decide what dev board to get, these hands down beat them all for general work, learning and having fun. And the idea of using graphics and games as a learning tool is very cool. They are so cool, I was given early prototypes, but I still bought a set for myself since the boards are WHITE which I have never seen before.
