If it's a Win7+ machine, the built-in backup solution works just fine. It's also simple in case you don't have/want to use the software to restore: Files are in zip archives, the system image is a vhd which can be booted in a virtual - you can actually "test" your backup images by booting them in microsoft's virtualization software. It rolls over for hdd space and all, and run effectively maintenance free (in fact, don't touch it). I can't remember if vista had a built-in backup solution.

Ask Slashdot: How Would You Secure Your Parents' PC? 408

New submitter StirlingArcher writes "I've always built/maintained my parents' PC's, but as Mum has got older her PC seems to develop problems more readily. I would love to switch her to Linux, but she struggles with change and wants to stay with Vista and MS Office. I've done the usual remove Admin rights, use a credible Internet Security package. Is there anything more dramatic that I could do, without changing the way she uses her PC or enforcing a new OS on her again? One idea was to use a Linux OS and then run Vista in a VM, which auto-boots and creates a backup image every so often. Thanks for any help!"

There is a downside to this approach, at least if actually taken "all the way": Tech companies will often pay for full moving expenses. Every company I've been involved with did, and all but one were quite generous about it. If he ends up having to completely hide that fact he's not in Seattle, he won't get that benefit.

I think the problem with Stalinist Russia was Stalin. It was also not free of religion, it placed Stalin in that role instead.

The concept that you need religion to preach morals is completely preposterous. Religion is a human creation after all, so clearly we already have an ingrained sense of morals.

Microsoft Donates Windows 8.1 To Nonprofit Organizations 224

An anonymous reader writes in with good news for Windows loving nonprofits and libraries. "Microsoft today announced the availability of Windows 8.1 for nonprofits. The move is an extension of the company's nod to the nonprofit community with the launch Windows 8. The announcement means eligible nonprofit organizations and public libraries can request Windows 8.1 through Microsoft's software donation program."

Most people I know use the share desktop feature to quickly show photos if they're off somewhere. Facetime is also apple-specific, and most phones in the world are android, and there are a few people on windows phones and blackberry still. I prefer things that can be used by everyone regardless of platform. Nothing from apple is suitable in that regard, and I doubt they ever will be.

I prefer the new VS aesthetic to the old one. The only issues I have with VS are that for new developers some of the configuration options are buried a bit too deeply. However, it's that much harder setting up emacs (or vim) to even approach what VS does, and still in the end the toolset is less robust. I've been waiting for gdb to stop it's random segfaulting for almost 20 years now...

Google Attacks Microsoft Again: Android 4.4 Ships With Quickoffice 178

An anonymous reader writes "With Android 4.4 KitKat, Google's biggest blow to Microsoft isn't against Windows Phone. It's against Microsoft Office. You see, KitKat ships with Quickoffice, letting you edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go, without paying a dime, straight out of the box. This tidbit was largely lost in the news yesterday, given the large number of improvements and new features that KitKat offers. Yet it's a very big deal: every Android user that upgrades to KitKat will get Google's Quickoffice, and every new Android device (starting with the Nexus 5) that ships with KitKat or higher will also get Quickoffice."

Perhaps, but where OP is wrong is where he thinks all modern GPUs can run a full 60 fps at 1080p. He is wrong. He also ignores 1200p, 1440p, 1600p, 1080px3, and all the other use-cases that require a high-end GPU. He also forgets that game developers are *always* pushing the limits.

In short, this article is stupid, and an embarrassment to /.
