Comment Distracting from 'situation awareness' (Score 2) 138

Pilot here - touch screens suck because 1) detracts from situational awareness (no muscle memory for touch displays) 2) it gets bumpy up there sometimes and difficult to press the correct video button. Often, not easy to 'anchor' your hand/thumb/finger to stabilize your hand - takes aware from flying the aircraft itself. THAT SAID - displays have been the BEST think to happen to avionics in a long time - not 'touch'.

Comment Inspiration - 65 and still too soon (Score 2) 23

What an inspiration. Retired - but not retired! I always thought Jack to be dialed right in to things (no pun intended) - sharp mind. Only 65 - darn, wish he took his health a little more seriously earlier on - he'd still be making videos. When I found out a few days ago - although I never knew him personally, I felt a loss in my own little world. He will be missed by many.

Comment Still tied to hardware that you purchased (Score 1) 197

Many of the extra 'pay for' features are tied to hardware in the vehicle. If the vehicles' computer is switching off functionality (such as a heated steering wheel), remember that you paid for that heated steering wheel already. Why would I want a car full of hardware (extra weight) that I can't use? ...whilst paying for fuel to move said useless hardware around? This is very different from licensing software that provides a different function not necessarily relying on additional peripheral hardware. I own a Tesla and cheaped out on the Auto-pilot - that said much of the hardware needed for auto-pilot (cameras/computer) is stilled used for other functions (traffic awareness) that is included in the cost of the vehicle - so that hardware isn't really dead weight.

Comment GPS Upgrade (Score 1) 99

USA had the GPS network operational in 1978 and fully in 1993 (mil). Pretty amazing if you think about it. All nations have been using the American system all these years. I wonder what innovations the American GPS system undergoes as new satellites are being built, and put into orbit.. I'm sure the new Chinese system has advantages, given the ~40 year gap in initial technology compared the US system. Interesting to see the evolution amongst all space based navigation systems.

Comment I'm the only person (Score 2) 28

When I read these articles on /. about the "decline of the PC" - I feel like I'm old an obsolete for using a desktop. I find notebook computers physically awkward. I like my big displays and a dedicated work desk with a full size mouse and keyboard. I have an iPad, and notebook computers that are high end - but I always gravitate to the desktop. How is this going the way of the dinosaur? I've tried working on the couch with the notebook - it sucks.

Comment Re:/Conspiracy theory (Score 0, Troll) 97

In the late 90's and early 2000's - Canada's Nortel was being spied on as well - no proof it was Huawei, but suspicions were high. Later, when Nortel went bankrupt, spying devices were found in their corporate headquarters. A lot of innovation came from Nortel on cellular, ethernet and routing. As you said, nothing to do with Trump, Libtards at work here on Slashdot

There was a lot of misinformation floating around. I'm holding off for a while on my plane, I really don't care about ADS-B in that much, but I want the 1090 Out vs the 978 so I can show up in flightaware. I know of the device your are talking about, the one that plugs into the nav or tail light, configurable on your smartphone.
