I absolutely agree that privacy is not taken very seriously in this country. You need to take responsibility for protecting yourself, because many businesses and even governments are generally only going to do what's best for them, not you.
For these reasons, I use as much extra security as I can comfortably manage, such as using long, complex passwords changed at least once a year, a VPN, email aliases, etc.
I got totally creeped out several years ago when Bank of America, with which I hold a single branded credit card, suddenly demanded to know my citizenship status. It is the only bank or financial institution to demand that from me. After that I got serious about privacy. Though, there is diddly squat I can do about credit agencies and their shitty security practices.
