Comment Re:Clearwire: am I missing something? (Score 3, Informative) 86

Clearwire deployed a proprietary broadband wireless access network based on Nextnet's technology. Nextnet was later bought by Motorola, who is a major infrastructure vendor for WiMAX, and Clearwire, as part of their merger with Sprint Xohm, will be switching to WiMAX.

WiMAX has two major variants: those based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard (called 16d or fixed WiMAX) and those based on the newer IEEE 802.16e-2005 (called 16e or mobile WiMAX) standard. There have been some small, limited build-outs of 16d, but 16e is destined to be much bigger, and that's why this is a big deal.

Sprint has been the primary backer of 16e because they acquired a lot of 2.5 GHz unpaired spectrum from their Nextel acquisition. With the launch of Sprint's Baltimore network, they've proven that a large, citywide network can deliver on the promises of WiMAX. This is a huge step forward for mobile broadband wireless access.

What If Yoda Ran IBM? 205

Esther Schindler writes to mention that one IT leader who came from big business found himself in quite another world when he transitioned into a smaller business, specifically with respect to the amount of attention from their vendors. He presents an amusing approach with a familiar twist. "Not only are the IBMs of the world leaving money on the table, they're also risking future sales. The IT leaders at small organizations will in many cases be employed by larger organizations someday. Why alienate them? Vendors could engage IT leaders in small organizations now and build brand loyalty. How could they make such a business model work? Let's imagine (with apologies to George Lucas) what Yoda might do if he were running a large consultancy."

Google Honors Veterans Day, Finally 693

theodp writes "It took nearly a decade, but Google has done a turnabout and is honoring Veterans Day with a special holiday design for its famous logo. Users who log onto Google's home page are greeted with three World War I-era helmets capping the letters 'o' and 'e' in Google's name. The decoration is a marked departure for the company, which has come under fire from veterans' groups for ignoring American holidays such as Veterans Day and Memorial Day since Google's inception in 1999."

Submission + - Manjoo says Macs are cheaper than PCs

sg3000 writes: "Flamewar! Don your flame retardant pants because Farhad Manjoo of Salon.com has an interesting suggestion. Because Macs have a higher resale value than PCs, they're cheaper than their Windows equivalents. He compared a Mac Mini bought a year ago to an HP Pavilion, and found that the Mac Mini was cheaper when you took resale on Ebay into account. What do you think?"

Submission + - Cisco buys WiMAX vendor Navini

sg3000 writes: "Cisco announced that they purchased WiMAX vendor Navini. As their site says, this represents a reversal of Cisco's position on WiMAX, when back in 2004, they stated that they weren't interested in building WiMAX radio access network equipment. WiMAX has come a long way since 2004, and today's environment suggests that WiMAX is much more promising."

Submission + - USA Today on early WiMAX deployments in USA

sg3000 writes: "Nearly two years after the standard was ratified in December 2005, mobile WiMAX has been heating up. USA Today reports that the first users in NYC and Chicago are deploying WiMAX and are enjoying it. Surprising for a consumer-grade report, the article contrasts the licensed (WiMAX and 3G mobile) versus unlicensed (WiFi) situation well. The usual suspects are represented: Motorola, Clearwire, and Sprint are positive. AT&T says WiMAX is limited to fixed wireless deployments and mobile users would be best served with HSPA."

Underground Mac Community Foils a Coup 253

An anonymous reader writes "In an attempted palace coup that would not have been out of place in a Shakespearian tragedy, a moderator faction at Mac Serial Junkie, one of the largest underground Mac communities, was shut out this weekend after it was discovered that many staff members were plotting a coup. The plans included a surreptitious takeover of the domain name macserialjunkie.com. In an Open Letter to the Community, the founders of MSJ explain how a number of people at the highest levels of the underground planned their takeover activities for almost two years, only to be foiled at the last minute."

A Field Trip To the Creation Museum 1854

Lillith writes "The anti-evolution Creation Museum opened last weekend and Ars took a field trip there and took lots of pictures. 'There were posters explaining just how coal could be formed in a few weeks as opposed to over millions of years, and how rapidly the biblical flood would cover the earth, drowning all but a handful of living creatures. The flood plays a big part in the museum's attempt to explain away what we see as millions of years of natural processes. There was also an explanation as to why, with only one progenitor family, it wasn't considered incest for Adam and Eve's children to marry each other.' (Myself, I liked the picture of the velociraptor grazing peacefully next to Eve, who is wearing some kind of dirndl, in the Garden of Eden.)" The reporter posted more photos from the museum on Flickr.

6G iPod & Apple's Future 226

belsin_gordon writes "CNET rounds up what we're going to get from the next iPod and where Apple is heading as a company and as a business juggernaut. [They have the] 100GB widescreen video iPods, Wi-Fi-enabled iPods capable of on-the-fly movie downloads over the air, unlimited downloads from iTunes for a flat fee and the UK finally getting its content-hungry hands on movie downloads. Apple has dropped the 'Computer' from its company name, and is making significant advances into the media-distribution business. It's bringing video to everyone everywhere with iTunes movies and now Apple TV, and the rumours and speculation we've discussed promote the theory that Apple is setting itself up as a major player in the media-distribution industry."

Submission + - Microsoft's Plot to Kill QuickTime

Mail.app writes: Following the 1997 agreement between Apple and Microsoft, there was a surface appearance that the two companies were now working as partners instead of rivals. "In many ways, this was actually true," says Daniel Eran Dilger, who then launches into a history of rivalry between Apple and Microsoft, citing testimony from the Microsoft monopoly trial to paint a secret story of desperation and intrigue between the largest installed base of media software, and Apple's aging, third place QuickTime. Why did Microsoft Plot to Kill QuickTime?

It may seem early to be compiling a retrospective of this year's best environmental tech inventions, but 2007 is shaping up as a watershed for eco-tech. Practical wave-generated power, anyone? With social and political attention turning toward the environment, there's finally market-driven pressure to move sustainability solutions out of the lab and into people's homes and driveways.
