Submission + - EarthLink Says No Future for Municipal Wi-Fi (wifinetnews.com)

Glenn Fleishman writes: "EarthLink dropped its final bombshell on city-wide Wi-Fi, saying that it wouldn't put more money in and was talking to their current deployed cities about the future. The company had won bids in dozens of cities, and then backed out of the majority of them before building or finalizing contracts a few months ago. The remaining towns they were building out, like New Orleans, Anaheim, and Philadelphia, will ostensibly be turned off unless local officials come up with scratch or a plan of their own. EarthLink pioneered the model of free-for-fee networks, where there would be no cost or upfront commitment from cities, and EarthLink would charge for network access. Apparently, you can't make money that way."

bulled writes: Wired is running a story about Gerrit Verschuur, an astronomer in Tennessee, who is challenging that pictures of the universe taken in 1992 showed the seeds of the galaxy. Vershuur claims that these seeds are closer than previously thought and are just unmapped clouds of neutral hydrogen.

Submission + - Zune 2.0 Disassembled (rapidrepair.com)

Mike Arnold writes: "Our company recently got their hands on a new flash based, 8GB Zune MP3 Player. In a fury of interest, we decided to do a step by step disassembly of the unit for the DIY who wants to start thinking of mods, or might just be interested in the technology involved. Given the audience that you are geared toward, we would hope that you would be interested in publishing something about the readily available and free disassembly guide. The guide, along with high quality photos can be located at http://www.rapidrepair.com/guides/zune2/Flash-Zune-8GB-Take-Apart-Guide.htm"

Submission + - SPAM: Oracle, VMware in pissing match

alphadogg writes: A VMware official on Friday scoffed at Oracle's contention that its recent entry into the virtualization market performs better than "the existing leader server virtualization product." Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Wednesday the company will provide benchmark numbers to back its claims, but as of Friday, those figures were not available. VMWare has also responded by putting up a blog post titled "Ten Reasons Why Oracle Databases Run Best on VMware."

Submission + - Windows Genuine Advantage broken

parepidemos writes: Not sure how many /.'ers run Vista but a growing number of people are finding today that their previously activated and validated copies are no longer genuine. Here is a link to the MS newsgroup with the rapidly growing number of victims; guaranteed that these folks are only a few of the many. I have yet to see this being mentioned on any news sites and figured Slashdot would be a good place to get the word out. Frankly, I'd like to see Microsoft get some bad press on this one. (Yes, I did get victimized by this myself and I'm more than a little PO'd).

Submission + - Court ruling is a serious blow to open source lega (blogspot.com)

JosefAssad writes: "In a decision centering around the violation of the Artistic License, a San Francisco court has denied an injunction against Matthew Katzer in the favor of Roberr Jacobsen of the JMRI project. Importantly, the decision makes the point that the Artistic License is a contract, an interpretation which the Free Software Foundation has been keen to avoid as a legal stance.

The JMRI project has a page up with the legal background and developments."

Submission + - Bioshock full of DRM: PC Gamer editor locked out

An anonymous reader writes: it appears that 2K Interactive have added DRM to the much anticipated Bioshock which requries on-line activation and limits you to two installs. In theory you gain an install back when you uninstall, but this is not currently working.

From the PCGamer blog http://www.pcgamer.com/
"So we installed on one machine, then uninstalled and installed on another with no problems. So far, so good. I got in about an hour of play time, but I do the majority of my game playing at home, where I've got my heavy-duty gaming rig set up, so I was really looking forward to bringing it home with me. I uninstalled the game from my work machine and happily headed home...but when I got there and went to activate, I was stopped dead by a failure message that informed me I'd installed with this code one time too many. What... the... $%~&!"

This DRM is NOT mentioned on the packaging of the game, or the EULA. How far do they think they can push their paying customers when they pull crap like this?
