then they should have said, "hey i know that we have these rules but these guys helped us out so we are going to give them a one time pass" "Charlie next time please work with us if you have a security hole and we will even give you a temporary account to play around with things to confirm or not future security holes". Wouldnt that have been the 'right thing' to do??
Patents

Submission + - You can now file with the USTPO to shoot down and invalidate obvious patents (wired.com)

Cutting_Crew writes: "Yes this is from Wired again, but as they state here today marks the first day that any 3rd party can file an injunction against patents that are frivolous, too obvious and even offer proof of prior art.

Stack Exchange has a patents forum now to help start the process as they have been working with google and also collaborating with the patent office since 2007 on testing patents.

So here is my question. Which frivolous, too obvious, downright ridiculous patent are you going to submit?"

i remember when my arms warrior had 100% Armor Penetration without any buffs in WOTLK. all from gear and gems. I had to run lots of numbers to figure out what drops i needed to accomplish this but finally I got it. The part about figuring out all the numbers and the number crunching in general was really fun. I am probably not in the majority there. I told the mods on blizzard that ALL they had to do to balance pvp and pve was to give certain abilities/stats/cd's different numbers, depending on whether or not you were in pvp or pve. The just change the tooltip for people to read it. And ALL i got back was something like "people would be confused or people dont want to read all that". If your players dont want to read a freaking tooltip and at least spend 30 minutes figuring their character out then maybe they should go and play MSN hearts. MMOs weren't designed for everyone. *rant over*
Apple

Submission + - How apple took advantage of a broken patent system (informationweek.com)

Cutting_Crew writes: " Information Week has an interesting article about how Apple has taken advantage of a broken patent system that has not kept up with technology.

Design patents seems to have come from a case involving silverware in 1891. "Design patents are generally agreed to be more subjective. They're good for 14 years, and spring from an 1891 court case that found one silverware manufacturer had copied the pattern of another. If the "ordinary observer" can detect "substantial similarity" in one silverware pattern versus another, the original's design has been infringed, ruled the Supreme Court. And that's still the standard used in a design patent case involving two sophisticated, multi-layered electronic devices today."

Has Apple gotten too close to the patent office or does the patent office lack the kind of expertise in the ever evolving technology field to decide in an unbiased fashion to grant a patent or not?

"Until now, design patents have tended to play a much smaller role in computing and consumer electronics. For example, of the 6,242 patent examiners in the U.S. Patent Office, 99 of them are design examiners. The rest are utility patent examiners.""

Apple

Submission + - The Worst Apple Store in America - An Employee Confession (gizmodo.com)

Cutting_Crew writes: "Gizmodo has a piece that describes probably one of the worst and most corrupt apple stores.

Two employees recount management exchanging brand new computers for facelifts(and other things) not just from customers but also from businesses. Everything else ranged from destroying devices repeatedly and ringing up new ones(for themselves and friends as fake customers) to outright stealing merchandise and cash.

I guess we should all make sure that we are polite when coming in for a repair just in case your "genius" help is intoxicated."

First, Did google not describe to the employees what exactly they would be doing? I know they said, "sensitive content" but that could mean a whole variety of things. Second, there is one thing that we all kid about and talk about and porn is one of them and I am sure that there are solid studies indicating that this does effect people in harsh ways. Its another thing to go venturing off into beheadings, beastiality and the like and not even get any kind of support from a company that has billions of cash. The least they could have done would have been to offer a support program, some take away money when leaving or *gasp* how about a full time position doing something more humane?

Submission + - The Worst Job at Google: A Year of Watching Child Porn and other trash (gizmodo.com)

Cutting_Crew writes: "Gizmodo puts a story together that describes the worst job that you can get at google , including watching decapitations and beastiality.

A google ex-employee who did just that tells his own story of a year long stint of looking at the most horrible things on the internet and in the end needed therapy and since he was a contractor he was let go and was not rolled over into a full time employee."

Sure you are never going to miss another soccer game or recital, birthday, graduation but you will be trying to stay awake the whole time. Who does she think she is? Without looking her up on google, facebook, etc etc i am willing to bet she isnt married, doesnt have kids etc. Its clearly more important to her to do work instead of living her life. Just last week they laid down fiber optic down the hwy that is perpendicular to the street that i live on and this week they were going to run the lines from the hwy to all the homes(which are a good mile from the hwy). I dont know if maybe in some areas that stopped expanding UVerse..I can just tell you that I just now got it and my neighbor should be getting the service up and running by this weekend. It really surprised me when i heard about it but I am glad.
