I never thought I'd have to read about My Little Pony here. Today is a sad day for me.

And Slashdot just became 20% cooler.

Sadly, ponies cannot effect a miracle and do better than that.

But oh sweet Celestia, I might spend more time here again if Taco brought back OMG PONIES theme but updated it for FiM. Sure, it might drive away the last vestiges of what made /. great; but, I mean, how much worse can the noise in the articles, headlines, and comments get? (Don't answer that.)

Also, the thought of Big Macintosh doing advanced mathematics makes me happy.

Better Copyright Through Fair Use and Ponies 169

Balinares writes "With even harmless parody sites like Peanutweeter now getting shut down by twitchy lawyers in the name of brand dilution concerns, the situation with fair use has become bleak. Yet some companies are learning at last. Variery reports that when parodies of their latest production started popping up online, Hasbro not only allowed it to happen, but started contributing some of their own. Now their My Little Pony reboot has gained a huge following and reached cult status. Fair use does make everything better. That, or it's the ponies."

No, I'm of the same mind.

I still use a Nokia 3120 (I think that's what it is) and have no data plan, so first-class SMS support is Twitter's killer feature for me. Until there is a smart phone and data plan out there which meet my needs and price, I will keep this arrangement as long as possible.

Nokia Introduces MeeGo-Powered N9 Phone 252

An anonymous reader writes with news that Nokia has unveiled its first MeeGo-powered smartphone, the N9. "[T]he smartphone doesn't have any buttons on the front, with only the volume controls and a lock button located on the right side of the device. ... The performance of the prototype device felt very snappy, and it looks almost ready for retail. As a MeeGo device, the N9 will be running apps based on the Qt platform." The Washington Post calls it "the platform that could have been," referring to Nokia's decision to make the transition to Windows Phone for future devices. Others are impressed with the device, but see it as either a dead end or just another distraction to Nokia's long-term plans.

What's a passing grade in this case? 60% Yes, I could get 60% on this test. I studied Latin for 6.5 years and still have many books I read on the subject. I have done basic Ancient Greek informally, so I'd do sorta OK on that. The history is, in some cases, subjective, but I remember enough of that. Math is straightforward.

An anonymous reader writes "At South by Southwest Interactive 2011 in Austin, Texas this week, 4chan founder Christopher Poole (also known as 'moot') took the stage to talk about various online issues. One of these was how important anonymity is on the Internet and how Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn't get it."

Criminal Charges Filed Against AT&T iPad Attacker 122

Batblue writes "The US Department of Justice will file criminal charges against the alleged attackers who copied personal information from the AT&T network of approximately 120,000 iPad users, the US Attorney's Office, District of New Jersey announced Monday. Daniel Spitler will be charged in US District Court in New Jersey with one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization and one count of fraud. Andrew Auernheimer will be charged with the same counts at the US Western District Court of Arkansas, which is in Fayetteville. Auernheimer made headlines last June when he discovered that AT&T's website was disclosing the e-mail addresses and the unique ICC-ID numbers of multiple iPad owners. Claiming that he wanted to help AT&T improve its security, he wrote a computer script to extract the data from AT&T and then went public with the information. AT&T said that nobody from Auernheimer's hacking group contacted them about the flaw."
