Journal Journal: Portrait of a Stereotypical Linux Dweeb 1

This guy is the sysop at Oakland University, a school in the suburbs of Detroit that I attend. I enjoy checking his blog now and then because he's simply the most devoted Linux dweeb I've observed yet. I'm not including RMS Groupies/Free Software Zealots because I just don't feel like it.

Anyway, evidence of his dweebdom can be found here, here, and especially here. I read that last entry at school last April; I about choked on my lunch when I saw "Oooh! Oooh!"

I think this guy might be a good candidate for the upcoming 2nd Annual Gayest Slashbot EVAR award. If only I can find his handle on Slashdot (assuming he has one, and you know he does - he has to have some way to talk to his Linux buddies). Do I hear any seconds on this motion? Of course, GNUALMAFUERTE should be nominated as well, but that's a given.

Journal Journal: Video Apps and Windows 1

I have a Playstation2 hooked up to a TV in my bedroom and the TV is about to give up the ghost (the picture is tilted maybe 10 degrees), so I've been playing around lately with running the Playstation2/DirecTV setup through the TV tuner on my Intel machine lately.

The strangest thing is how VLC in Windows delays the video slightly. This isn't an issue with TV, but it makes playing games pretty much impossible (Gran Turismo 4 + Delay in steering = migraine). This in itself isn't too odd - what's odd is how the exact same hardware performs wonderfully under Linux. I don't like to blowjob Linux like the average Slashdotter, but it seems kind of gay that this kind of setup is difficult if not impossible under Windows.

That said, you can fiddle around with some settings in VLC to get it to perform in a more real-time manner, but it seems to introduce stability issues. I get random sound cut outs and fun things like that.

Of course, I could dual boot the Pentium 4 box with Ubuntu or something but this seems a little labor intensive just to be able to fire up a nice game of Nocturne on my sexy flat panel display. Does anyone know of any decent free as in cheap video capture software for Windows? I'm considering DScaler but I'm a little apprehensive about the ominous warnings on their site (hard drive failures scare me since I'm running software RAID).

Journal Journal: George Bush Doesn't Care about Black People 2

You probably heard about Kanye West having kittens about George Bush during some NBC Hurricane Katrina fund raiser concert thing.

I'll get right to the point. What the fuck is with niggers always blaming everything on the fact that they are in fact niggers? A few years back I saw some black guy on the local news saying that the reason he got a speeding ticket for going 70 mph in a 35 mph zone is that he was black. I laughed it up pretty hard core on that one. But seriously folks, isn't there some law somewhere or some shit that says the W couldn't send Army/National Guard/Coast Guard/Your Mom into Louisiana unless Kathleen Blanco asked him to? I think Kanye ought to be flipping out on that bitch instead. She has a dumb name anyway.

Journal Journal: C# is Teh Ghey 1

Last winter I had to take a class at my university entitled "Event Driven Programming." The guidebook said that it would be in Java, so I figured the class would be a blow off since I've been doing Java for years and am pretty comfortable with it.

Anyway, I show up to class the first day and the lady who taught my section (coincidentally the only section that semester) said that she was going to be teaching the class in C#. This of course pissed me off, since the only usable implementation of C# on my preferred operating system (OS X) was Mono, which doesn't have Windows Forms implemented (at least I don't think so). You could probably compile the thing from scratch and get it all set up, but I'm not running Linux. Compiling is for douches like this guy.

So anyway, after about 8 months of playing around with C# I can tell you that it kind of sucks. It's a quasi-interpreted language (people would say it's compiled just-in-time like) which makes you think it would be completely architecture/platform independant, but since Microsoft developed it there aren't any really usable implementations for other platforms (no shock there). You can develop command line apps all you want with Mono on other platforms, but GUI ones are another story. Yes, I know about GTK#, but GTK+ is ugly enough... the idea of having an interpreted language driving that shitfest makes me want to puke.

Anyway, I guess I'm back to writing shit in Java, at least when I want a quick, dirty app. I'd like to fuck around with Cocoa as well, but I can't find any books out there that don't suck for learning it. Plus, it would help if I had my iMac back before I tried this.

Journal Journal: Apple Customer Service 2

About a month ago I bought a 17" 2.0 GHz iMac G5 from the Apple Store down in Troy, a swanky suburb of Detroit. It's a pretty spiffy machine for dev work, with the exception that for some reason the fuckheads working on the SDL project don't see fit to provide dev packages for anything other than Windows and Linux. They had this neato deal going on where I got me a nice iPod and a printer along with the system and saved quite a bit of dough. I was very pleased.

Notice the operative word - "was." Things were going fine until I decided to clean install OS X on my PowerBook over the weekend. I was too damn lazy to copy shit from the iMac over my LAN so I booted it up in FireWire Disk Target mode and let the Tiger setup application bring my profile over. I then proceeded to go to the XP box and watch some porn while the copy executed (it takes a while to copy my home folder since it has like 4000+ mp3s inside it).

I came up about an hour later with a sore wrist (LOL) and noticed that the iMac had frozen. WTF. I rebooted it and all I was able to get was a series of clicking noises coming from the upper left corner of the machine (that's where the hard disk is). I left it alone over night and tried it again in the morning, checking the machine with the Apple Hardware Test disc. It passed with flying colors.

Amazingly, the system booted up fine the rest of that day and Monday. On Tuesday, however, it gave up the ghost; it wouldn't boot at all. I spent over an hour on the phone with AppleCare trying to get the issue resolved; mostly, so they'd shut up about it being a software problem and agree that it needed warranty service.

They finally shut up about it being a software problem. One douchebag even suggested that I should perform a permission check on the drive (basically running a big chmod shell script to see if the permissions on the drive are okay). I'm sure that file system permissions have a LOT to do with mechanical clicking sounds coming from the hard drive. Anyway, they suggested I try reinstalling Mac OS X on it and then taking it to the Apple Store for service. I took it back up there today.

So, I arrived at the "Genius Bar" around 11:45a today. The "Genius Bar" is a place for dumb fuckers to bring their Mac in and have some fat smelly douche computer tech them to death. I had to wait until like 1:00p to get service. The rest of the time, they were helping this cute asian girl who was too dumb to realize that the external USB hard drive she was hooking up to her iBook was bad. When I finally sat down, it took a couple of minutes for them to recognize I was there for my "appointment" when there were a bunch of prostatots clogging up the counter. Anyway, I waited at least 100 years to be told that he agreed and I had a bad hard disk. The lazy fuckers wouldn't even give me a new machine; they have to send out for the part, install it and then give it back. It'll take until Wednesday or Thursday.

Now, I'm not going to have a tantrum like this guy and break the damn thing, but seriously, WTF. Because of that fucking machine, I haven't even been able to properly annoy our bestest buddy in the whole wide world this week. Now, I have a whole week of bothering to catch up on. Gay.

Journal Journal: The GNUALMAFUERTE Saga Continues 1

I'm really getting to this guy, aren't i? Over the last week, I was starting to think that he was going to do the smart thing and just wait the storm out, but he just keeps biting on every chunk of bait I throw out. Hell, I don't even have to throw them anymore, and this shit proves it.

I think maybe a little later today, I'll start collecting all the posts and replies I've made with this guy and put them into a nice PDF document for safe keeping. If anyone wants a copy, I'll try to put one up on some anonymous FTP space or something.

Has anyone noticed something strange here lately? I just posted a comment a few minutes ago and not only has it not shown up in the comments yet but it hasn't shown up in my posting history either. I wonder if CowboiKneel sat on the database server again.

I've moved to a really original new ID. I figured I had sucked most of the fun out of this one. On this one, I'm getting banned after about every post. That's no fun. Anyway, feel free to comment on my journal there and I'll re-add you to my prestigious friend's list, so we can all continue our little circle jerks, k?

Journal Journal: R.I.P. Trolltalk 4

I first started reading Trolltalk about a year or so ago I think. I never really posted there for fear of being reamed hard in the ass until I overcame my shyness in March.

Trolltalk used to be a nice diversion. Sometimes during a boring class, I would hop on with my school's WiFi access and read a few posts. They were generally funny - although mostly about Cracky or Mercatur - but they caused me many times to snicker or giggle in the middle of class. I'm pretty sure a few people at school think I'm a nutjob because of this. Oh well.

Now, some asshole is (and has been) crapflooding Trolltalk. He started in late April/early May. For a while, conversation continued, until he start increasing the frequency of his posts. Now, I haven't seen any non-crapflood posts on Trolltalk in several days. The crapflooding just drowns everything out.

I'm sure anyone who reads this journal will undoubtedly know all of this has happened (I don't make very many friends here who aren't trolls), but I'm just in a period of mourning. Although the crapflood is kind of funny, I just wish whoever was doing it would change targets and crapflood Malda's journal or something (actually, I had the thought once that it would be funny if the crapflooder were Malda, trying to get even with trolls for the "KATHLEEN IS FAT LOL" jokes by flooding them out of 20721 and then closing the sid).

Oh well. Time to find a new place to converse.

Journal Journal: Is It Good or Is It Whack?

I've written about GNUALMAFUERTE before, specifically in a poll about him being the gayest Slashbot evar. I haven't yet notified him of his celebrity status, but I do like to keep trabs on this drip, since he's just like RMS (without the eloquence and proper written English).

Anyway, check out this thread started last Saturday. I replied to it and waited for his reply, which came last night during a lecture I attended. I couldn't pass up the chance, so I started things up. Needless to say, GNUALMAFUERTE never disappoints and took the bait hook, line and sinker.

So, is it good or is it whack? Perhaps I should notify him of his celebrity status soon. Comments, anyone?
