Submission + - Palm Pre users suffer cloud computing data loss (appleinsider.com)

DECS writes: Palm Pre users have been hit by a new cloud sync failure resulting in lost contacts, calendar items, notes and tasks, which now means that virtually every major smartphone vendor has suffered significant cloud problems: Apple's MobileMe last year, Nokia's Ovi and Microsoft's Danger/Sidekick this year, and additional rolling outages suffered by BlackBerry and Google users. Will vendors dial back cloud-only sync, or at least begin providing more robust local sync and restore features along the lines of the iPhone's iTunes sync? Windows Mobile and Android are still pursuing designs that, like the Pre, expected users to fully rely on central cloud servers rather than defaulting to a local backup option.

Submission + - Google Maps Navigation now on all Android Devices

farble1670 writes: Google has rolled Google Maps Navigation for all Android 1.6+ devices, even the lowly HTC Dream (aka T-Mobile G1). Features include traffic, satellite, and street view overlaid with your route. PC World has a nice feature overview. What does this mean for dedicated GPS device makers, now that a free, "good enough" turn by turn GPS is available to the ever-increasing number of Android users? What does it mean for the iPhone, where Google has yet to port this application? Google says it will port, if Apple approves.

After using it for a few days now, I agree with the "good enough" verdict.

Submission + - "Slot Music" format seeks to replace Music CDs (seekingalpha.com)

An anonymous reader writes: In the face of dwindling music-CD sales Sony BMG, Universal, Vivendi and Warner Music Group team up with SanDisk to create a new storage medium to be sold in stores.

The new format is simply a 1GB MicroSD card with mp3 music encoded with up to 320kbit/s. To my surprise the cards will come to you without any DRM protection whatsoever. The retail versions of the so-called "Slot Music" media also contain USB-adapters for easy use on PCs and Laptops. But with MicroSD slots absent from most media players including Apples Iphone and Ipod chances are this format will go the way of the HD-DVD
