Comment Not 'selling Blender', selling tutorials (Score 1) 294

This has been gone over repeatedly over at blenderartists.org .... Basically they're selling tutorials (many if not most of which are also freely downloadable) and including Blender, making brief note of the GPL as required. Not quite a scam, not quite legit, but legal ..... but also not really a problem ultimately because, as mentioned, it is NOT the most up-to-date version; nor are the tutorials and plug-ins. Kinda sux, but what can ya do? And who's really going to buy it anyhow? ... meh :D

Everyone seems to be forgetting that the internet was originally a military endeavor ( ARPAnet, then DARPAnet, the the Internet, now the Internet 2 and the darknet ), with specific design goals of NOT being able to be crippled or shut down. They hired geeks and hackers to make it so .... and the geeks and hackers HAVE made it so. Sure, government could limit and hurt standard access. They could attempt to shut down DNS servers, etc .... but geeks and hackers would have it back up in no time. Your general tech-ignorant user may not be able to ... i don't know ... use Netflix or watch porn (oh, wait ... that would pop right back up too ;^p ) ........ but the 'net cannot be 'shut down', as it were. What a silly idea. Especially for the reasons given for the need. Thank you. I was going to post this myself, but decided to look thru here and see if anyone else brought this up. sure, the internet as it is now is quite complex. However, the lines over which it runs still exist, so there's nothing to stop (and nothing CAN stop) people from booting up new DNS servers, etc ... if some sort of 'kill switch' attempt was made. Just. Not. Possible. Period. Geeks and hackers BUILT and DESIGNED the internet .... and they will keep it alive. period. exclamation point. The moon hasn't "fallen" into the ocean recently because it's moving fast enough that it's constantly "falling" over the horizon of Earth. That's how an orbit works. The moon is near the top of Earth's gravity well, and in that sense it IS downhill; and while it has it's own gravity to deal with to get anything into Earth's influence, that doesn't take a helluva lot of energy comparatively, and the proper trajectory is easily calculable.

FCC Approving Pay-As-You-Go Internet Plans 414

An anonymous reader writes "As details emerge about the Federal Communications Commission's controversial proposal for regulating Internet providers, a provision that would allow companies to bill customers for how much they surf the Web is drawing special scrutiny. Analysts say pay-as-you-go Internet access could put the brakes on the burgeoning online video industry, handing a victory to cable and satellite TV providers. Public interest groups say that trend will lead to a widening gap in Internet use in which the wealthiest would have the greatest access."
