While I think that most of the artist's claims are silly (because AI tools are just that: a tool. And because the AI models are simply 'inspired' by previous work, just lie any human would be) I have to give that guy props for dragging Disney into the battle. This will quite quickly resolve many misunderstandings.
I think the resolution will be quite obvious: I can create Mickey Mouse images all I want, just like I can (if I could draw, that is) sketches of Mickey for my personal use, and even Disney wont bat an eye.
But if I generate or draw Mickey Mouse, and publish those pictures, and even worse: profit from them, I will get sued to hell.
The remaining issue is where Mickey Mouse ends, and where some Mickey Mouse inspired image which is not Mickey Mouse starts. But that's not a new issue, either. And even DIsney wont sue me for generating images that have a stylistic resemblance to some of their cartoons, as long as I don't use obvious clones of their characters.

In (german) driving school, you are taught to use the handbrake for complicated hilly starts.
You pull the handbrake, disengage the clutch just a little until the car starts to incline forward a bit, then take the foot of the brake pedal and onto the gas.
Sure, this burns your clutch a bit. But that's the proper start-on-steep-incline-with-another-car-stuck-10cm-behind-you technique.
My das used to put an egg behind one of the wheels, and made us start on an incline without breaking it.

Comment DIY null modem cables (Score 1) 95

I lugged my old school PC (with CRT monitor and all) to a friend's house to play Doom 2 Deatchmatch. It was glorious!
I didn't have a serial cable, though. So I cut some electricity wire, and just pressed it over the pins of the serial ports (pin 2, 3 and 5 in a DB9 port. Pins 2,3, 7 in a DB25 port) and hooked up our PCs that way. Worked great.
The bas thing is that I am still spoiled by that experience. I don't get online deathmatches. Where the fun in fragging if you can't see and hear the pain of your enemy, when you killed him in a beautiful way?

I'd love to see hybrid aitcraft engines.
Maybe kerosone/hydrogen, or even electric/kerosene?
I think aircraft just need full thrust when taking off or in certain maneuvers, and use way less thrust when cruising. And the energy densit of fossil fuels is still great. So maybe this could be feasible?
And aren't high bypass engines essentially big fans? I.e. most of the thrust comes from the fans spinning, and not the jet exhaust. So maybe we could spin them electrically when possible?

Some post on the internet claim that the highest sound frequency is in the Gigaherz range.
Do you know if that is true? I would think that the highest possible sound frequency would depend on the speed of sound and the density of the medium?

While I really liked the idea behind Mindstorms, I always recommend against it for kids, because of vendor lock in and expense.
With just a littttle bit more education and know-how, even kids can start with Arduino and all the possibilities that ecosystem gives you.
And the maker ecosystem is infinitely broad and can be directly used in real-world stuff later on. It's great.
Some people made 3D printed adapters, so that you can use Arduino stuff with Lego mechanics. It's a match made in heaven! But it got taken down by Lego, I think. But the STL files must be available somewhere.

Human are not rational. Whatever we consider rational is first filtered through our emotional subconcious, which cherry-picks whatever it wants to hand off to consciousness. That is actually most of what the brain does. It takes formal education and quite an effort to at least try to circumvent that, and be scientific. And most people - especially the ones that shout "i did my own research!" - do not put in that effort.
It's the same BS with human caused climate change. There is simply no point arguing with the deniers anymore.
Maybe, maybe, maybe one could get through to their withered brain by first showing a lot of empathy and understanding, and by using all those "how to convince people" tricks. Maybe.

Anyhow: I think a hard part of the requirements should be that the consumer can somehow change the server the dievice talks to, if one chooses to.
It would be trivial to implement, and would allow all devices to seomhow keep functioning, even if the company that produced them goes under.

The pound has also fallen against the euro, although not by as much.

There's something I dont fully understand.
How do indirect exchange rated work?
Since the Euro has it's own exchange rate against the dollar, how could the pound-to-euro rate be different than the pound-to-euro-to-dollar rate?
Wouldn't indirect exchange rates always be the same as the direct ones?
