The old way of doing things worked back when a computer was a thing that sat in a server room,...

My workstation in the office is sitting in the same place for 20 years (if we ignore HW upgrades). The same is true for my home machine. So why is a thing designed for mobile devices shoven down my throat?

If you use a notebook and take it to a different place 10 times a week, you travel, you move between a showroom, your desk and the conference room, you need to connect in the train and airport ... be my guest and use the tool that helps you dealing with that. But why forcing it to everyone?

Submission + - Twitter offices shut down after mass resignations (marketwatch.com) 7

quonset writes: Elon Musk gave a deadline of 5 PM Thursday for Twitter employees to decide whether they want to commit to “extremely hardcore” work or else leave the company. As of Friday morning Twitter offices are shut down because so many people tendered their resignation. From the story:

The full scope of the departures wasn’t immediately clear. After the Thursday deadline passed and resignations became apparent, Twitter emailed employees saying that the company was temporarily closing its office buildings effective immediately. The offices will reopen Monday, the email said.

As the deadline approached Thursday, some employees posted farewells to the company’s internal Slack messaging platform, according to screenshots viewed by The Wall Street Journal. Some posted the “saluting face” emoji, which many employees had adopted as a symbol of the end of Twitter’s pre-Musk era following mass layoffs earlier this month.

This continues the ongong saga of Musk's attempt to take control over the company. It began with his comment (on Twitter no less) that he would be buying the company, followed by months of him trying to get out of the $44 billion arrangement.

After acceding to the purchase, he then proceeded to fire the Twitter board, half of its workforce, then promptly said Twitter may have to declare bankruptcy as more and more advertisers stopped buying ad space.

Musk then said he'd implement an $8/month fee for people to have the vaunted blue checkmark, the sign of a verified account, which instantly led to massive trolling, including in one case for Eli Lily which said it would give insulin shots away for free leading to a 5% decline in the company stock.

Musk continued his purge by firing 80% of all Twitter contractors, without notice, and firing employees who corrected him.

Stay tuned.

Okay. I know that it is a little bit more complex. There is also the color space involved and perhaps something more. However let's say (for the sake of argument) I pick up "Cappucino Foam" in Adobe Photoshope and draw a square and it shows up as particular color on my calibrated OLED monitor. Now I send that picture to the offset-print shop and ask them to print it on their calibrated printer. What is actually being sent? RGB values with colorspace/gamma/lightning/whatever? Or do they actually get a string "Cappucino Foam" and they translate that into a (possibly) different (!) set of RGB values/colorspace/gamma/lightning/whatever? Sure they will convert it to CMYK for printing to paper. Or whatever the offset printing device needs. But other then that? Is sending a string really superior (and worth licensing!) to a data structure with the numbers?

I did see some code dealing with Pantone colors. And the data from Pantone contained just information such as catalog name, ordinal number within the catalog, color name, code and ... rgb values. in sRGB color space. Nothing fancy about that.

If you use the color picker, there's no guarantee that that color will be identical from run to run.

How so? There is Pantone color with name "Cappucino Foam" that has in Pantone system the components [red=246,green=243,blue=232]. Surely if I use color picker and enter the values and you do the same then we will be both looking that the same color (assuming calibrated device). Or not?

So how is it different saying "Cappucino Foam" compared to saying "[red=246,green=243,blue=232]" or "#f6f3e8" ?

It's quite worse than that when the only dick that ends up on the chopping block at the end of the hacked day, is the poor scapegoat in charge of security

Over here (EU) a law was passed a few years ago that requires Certified Information Security Manager a required position in critical infrastructure (ISP, telecom, banks, power distribution, ... ). To my understanding CISM is by law subordinated only to the CEO and bears no liability. He provides his findings and recommendations to CEO, but CEO is ultimately liable/responsible for accepting them and implementing the security.

Thats basically it - a typical every day person in the UK won't deal with any paperwork on the above, they will get a statement from their employer once a year detailing what tax they did pay but dont have to act on it.

So basically it is easy because instead of you the employer's accounting department deals with it. It's the same here. Unless you are self-employed. Then it is back to square one.

Dolphin is a shockingly bad file manager. I have no idea how to select/manipulate multiple files. I don't even really know how to reliably select files without opening them.

I do not know what is the intended way but:
- click into area in the column for filename and in the row of the file you want to select but not on the file name - i.e. click in the empty area after the filename. You need to have the column for the file name wide enough.
- alternatively when hovering about the icon there is a green plus sign overlaying the icon. Clicking the plus sign selects the file. When hovering above a selected file, there is a red minus sign overlaying the icon. Clicking the minus sign deslects the file. If you have bigger icons, the plus and minus signs are only in the upper left corner of the icon so there is a difference where in the icon you click - whether on the +/- sign in the corner (changes selection) or somewhere else (opens the file).
- afterwards you can use Ctrl+click on a filename to add more individual files to the selection or Shift+click on a filename to extend the selection up to the clicked file.
- to open all selected files just press Enter

Did it help?

What I particularly like about Dolphin is Ctrl+i which allows to filter the files by a substring in the filename.

From your link (emphasis mine):
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky is touting new CDC data that suggests people who have been fully vaccinated almost never carry COVID-19.

Fully vaccinated people almost never test positive for COVID-19

Oh and even:

Fully vaccinated people almost never test positive for COVID-19

When I heard experts talking about vaccine, I heard them saying "significantly reduces the chances that you will end in the hospital needing intensive care". But that is too complex for Joe Sixpack. Joe Sixpack says "even if you get vaccinated, you still can get the virus" The fact, that the probability is much lower, is lost to him. So you simplify the message to Joe Sixpack's level: "get vaccinated and you don't get sick". To which Joe Sickpack says "that's not true because my cousin's dog's hairdresser was vaccinated and got sick anyway. Your experts are liars and full of it."

So what exactly should CDC say to not "abuse their role/power"?
